Nigeria is not a banana republic where Buhari and Tinubu will reach pact on next presidency – Yahaya Bello

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has punctured the purported pact between President Muhammadu Buhari and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu concerning the 2023 presidential election.

Both are leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, with Tinubu being instrumental to Buhair’s emergence.

Speaking on this in an interview with ‘Daily Trust’, Bello said such a pact could not be binding on him or anyone.

He said, “Senator Tinubu is one of our leaders and I respect him so much. He has played a very significant role in Nigeria’s democracy and has built a lot of people. He has paid his dues, and with all respect, as a son to him, my simple advice is that it is time for him to allow his children take over the mantle of leadership and do it to the glory of God and his admiration. He should see that those children he raised are now doing well. Let him see how we manage this country in his lifetime. However, he has a right to run, nobody is questioning that. I always urge everybody to respect him for the roles he has played in this country’s democracy. He is a man of integrity, to be candid.

“The APC is guided by a constitution, which every member and even intending members ought to read and understand. Let me tell you that Nigeria is not a banana republic, which a committee of one or two persons will see as a personal estate or property. You can’t even do that in a council ward in this country, not to talk of Nigeria as a country.

“Governing this country is not a one or two-man show. We also have the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which is guiding us. Every action and activity of powers is clearly spelt out in the constitution.

“I was not there when the purported or implied understanding took place. But today, we have over 40 million members of this great party and you are telling me that, assuming without conceding, that such understanding took place, we are bound by it? I think President Buhari and Senator Tinubu have the interest of this country and the APC at heart. They want a popular, credible and qualified Nigerian to lead this country.

President Buhari is leading an all-inclusive government and party, not for the two of them or few individuals. This idea of me and my friends or associates is archaic and aristocratic. It should not be discussed in a democracy because it is outdated and has no place again in our constitution; not anywhere in the world.”

Resident doctors refuse to sign new deal with FG

Meanwhile, the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) yesterday refused to append its signature on a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) entered by the Nigeria Medical Association to end the strike action it embarked on that has grounded hospitals across the country.

President of the association, Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, refused to assent to the MoU as a result of a clause that didn’t go down well with them.

Okhuaihesuyi said NARD’s leadership will have to consult with members of the association before appending his signature.

Speaking with journalists at the end of a meeting held behind closed doors for over six hours, minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said all other unions in the negotiation, including the Nigeria Medical Association and the Medical and Dental Consultants of Nigeria, signed the new agreement, having agreed on all the issues raised.

The minister however that the meeting did not discuss the issues of ‘no work, no pay,’ but said all parties at the meeting agreed to an out-of-court settlement.

The federal government had dragged the striking doctors before the National Industrial Court, asking it to mandate the doctors to return to work.

FG moves to declare Day for Senior Citizens

The Federal Government has said it would soon declare a special national day to celebrate the Senior citizens of the country.

This was disclosed on Tuesday by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq in Abuja.

The assurance was given when the management team of the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) led by its Director-General, Dr Emem Omokaro paid the Minister a courtesy visit in Abuja.

The Minister said, “We are requesting for assistance for the NSCC to secure the National registration of senior citizens of Nigeria (SCN) who are 70 years and above.

“I want to assure the NSCC of my resolve to follow on with the request made by Omokaro, through the relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies,”.

The NSCC DG had earlier appealed to the Federal Government for the declaration of a national day of older persons in the country.

Bismillah Jan Mohammad and Qudratullah Rahimi, lawmakers from Afghanistan's Uruzgan said local officials surrendered Tarin Kowt to the Taliban.

Mohammad said the governor was heading to the airport to depart for Kabul.

The Australian government has confirmed 570 locally engaged ­employee (LEE) humanitarian visas were granted to Afghanis since April.

But a further 50 approved applicants were still in Afghanistan and certain to face persecution or worse at the hands of the Taliban - which has a policy of killing Afghans who have worked with foreign powers.

The Muhammadu Buhari-led government on June 5, 2021 indefinitely banned Twitter, restricting it from operating in Nigeria after the social media platform deleted tweets posted by Buhari.

Buhari's tweets, which many Nigerians found distasteful, had warned the Southeastern people of Nigeria against secession agenda, threatening to deal with them "in the language they understand". His comments referenced the Nigeria Civil War (1967-1970) in which an estimated 2 million South-Easterners died of starvation.

However, the Nigerian government claimed the ban was ultimately based on "a litany of problems with the social media platform in Nigeria, where misinformation and fake news spread through it have had real world violent consequences".

It also accused Twitter of threatening the corporate unity of Nigeria.

In the video obtained by SaharaReporters, Mohammed is seen trying to disguise with a baseball cap.

A top source who disclosed the destination and the mission of the government team to SaharaReporters, said, "You can see Lai Mohammed trying to disguise with a face cap, he flew on seat 8A in the business class section of Delta Airline from Lagos to New York.

"He flew with his Special Assistant, Olusegun Adeyemi who took seat 8C in the business class."

This comes after a statement by Mohammed last Wednesday that Nigeria would soon lift its ban on Twitter after resolving some of its differences with the social media platform, signalling the end of a policy widely condemned as an affront to freedom of expression.

The ban was condemned by Amnesty International, Swedish Embassy and the British and Canadian missions in Nigeria.

Domestic organisations including the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) have challenged the ban in court.

Sadly, though many Nigerians have bypassed the ban by using Virtual Private Network (VPN), the already battered economy of the country loses a fortune every day to the ban.

For instance, as at August 6, British firm, Top10VPN estimated that the ban had affected around 104.4 million internet users in the country, and cost the country around $366.9 million. The firm made the calculations using a tool developed by internet governance watchdog organisation, Netblocks, and Internet Society, a US advocacy nonprofit.

Israeli criticism of Palestinians in the town of Beita who burned an effigy of the Star of David with a Nazi swastika has prompted an outrageous response from the organizers: “You [Israelis] are worse than Hitler and the Nazis … Yes, we want to burn you alive.”

The shocking response came on Facebook page ‘Beita Victory’, which had posted the original pictures of the effigy being made and burned, along with flaming torches carried by supporters, including children.

Breaking: Popular RCCG Pastor Is Dead

Report reaching this online medium has it that Pastor Danjuma Tafa-Balewa of the Redeemed Christian church of God, Cornerstone Parish (My Father’s House), Okota is dead.

A source told the Publisher Nigeria that Pastor Danujma died of COVID-19 complications.

According to IDOMA VOICE, the cleric and his wife, Vera as well as some family members had been on isolation after testing positive to the virus.

Kabul has fallen. The Taliban has taken the control of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, after 9 hours of an armed battle between Afghan forces and the Taliban. This was confirmed by a source of The Eastern Herald in Kabul. Since then we are not able to communicate with our journalists in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan .

The Taliban are now searching every house in Kabul for political leaders and oppositions. They have already planned to assassinate the president and other political and religious leaders who don’t accept their supremacy.

Now all the religious minorities are in extreme danger of extermination.

The United States asked Pakistan for help but for some strange reasons Islamabad denied assistance to the Afghan forces. Islamabad is willing to bring Afghanistan to the same stage that it faced during the Soviet invasion. During the Soviet invasion, Pakistan extorted billions of dollars from the United States and Saudi Arabia.

Also, on Saturday, US President Joe Biden raised the number of US forces sent to Afghanistan to participate in the evacuation of embassy staff and Afghan civilians, warning the Taliban movement advancing to Kabul not to obstruct this mission.

Biden said that after consulting with his national security team, he decided to send “about five thousand” US soldiers, ie two thousand more than the scheduled number, explaining that these soldiers will be deployed in Afghanistan to organize the evacuation and end the American mission after twenty years of field operations.

Biden again defended his decision to withdraw the US army from Afghanistan, saying, “I am the fourth president to take office in light of the presence of American forces in Afghanistan,” stressing, “I will not bequeath this war to a fifth president.”

On Saturday, a new force of American soldiers arrived in Kabul for evacuations.

US Central Command spokesman, Commandant Bill Urban, said that after the arrival of the first force of Marines on Friday, US soldiers “continue” to land in Kabul to evacuate diplomats and Afghans who had dealt with the United States and feared Taliban retaliation.

He did not specify the number of soldiers, nor did he say whether the evacuation of diplomats from the US embassy in Kabul had begun.

Defense Department spokesman John Kirby said Friday that the United States plans to evacuate “thousands of people a day” and expects “the majority of the 3,000 personnel to arrive by the end of the week.”

This week, about 4,200 people work at the US embassy in Kabul, where thousands of Afghan interpreters and others who have helped US forces are seeking to leave, fearing Taliban reprisals.

The Pentagon estimates that about 30,000 people will need to be evacuated by August 31, with the deadline set by President Joe Biden to complete the withdrawal from this country.

On Saturday, Taliban militants took control of the city of Mazar-i-Sharif and became on the outskirts of the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Atiqullah Ghayur, who lives next to the famous Blue Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif, said that the Taliban insurgents were “celebrating on their vehicles and motorbikes, shooting in the air,” noting that Afghan forces withdrew from the city.

Ritualists gang rape, kill 50-year-old woman, remove her eyes and private parts in Delta

Suspected ritualists have killed a 50-year-old woman, Mrs. Patience Komone, at Umeh community, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The suspected ritualists allegedly removed the eyes and private parts of the deceased and dumped her remains in a bush in the community.

The deceased fondly called Pat, a native of Otughievwen, Ughelli South Local Government Area was declared missing by her family since Tuesday 27 July, when she left her home to Umeh where she periodically buys pepper and sundry vegatables for sale along Sapele Road, Effurun, Uvwie.

The State Commissioner of Police, Ari Mohammed Ali, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday, August 4, said decomposing body of the woman was found in the bush on Tuesday, following the arrest of one suspect, Onoriode Simon Akpoavirhi, 25, the Okada rider who carried her on that fateful day.

The suspect was paraded alongside sixteen others arrested for kidnapping, armed robbery and cultism across the state.

On interrogation, the suspect confessed to the killing of the missing woman in connivance with one Akpoghene Shoemaker, now at large. They raped her and robbed her of the sum of forty thousand before killing her using a machete.

The suspect also confessed that one lucky Daniel of Ohoro town contracted them to bring the body parts for him after paying them one hundred thousand naira (N100,000).

"Sequel to the missing person report received by the Command on 2/8/21 at about 1456hrs of one Mrs. Patience Komore aged 50yrs, who disappeared after leaving for Umeh market in Isoko south LGA to get fish. I directed the Divisional police officer Oleh to unravel the mystery behind her disappearance," the CP stated.

"The DPO Mobilized police operatives, vigilante, and community leaders who continuously worked together and gathered information regarding the case. Acting on a tip off, on 3/8/2021 at about 1300hours, One Onos Simon m’ age 25yrs an Okada man was arrested, the Okada rider was the same person who carried the woman on that faithful day. On interrogation, the suspect confessed to the killing of the missing woman Mrs. Patience Komore in connivance with one Akpoghene Shoemaker ‘m’ now at large.

"They raped her and robbed her of the sum of forty thousand before killing her using a machete. Not only did they kill her, they also removed her eyes and private part for ritual purposes. Suspect also confessed that one lucky Daniel of Ohoro town contracted them to bring the body part for him after paying them one hundred thousand naira (#100,000).

"The decomposing corpse has been recovered and deposited in the mortuary. Members of the public are hereby urged to assist the police with useful information that can lead to the arrest of the fleeing Akpoghene shoemaker and lucky Daniel," he added.
