Court threatens to jail Buhari, Senate President Lawan, Malami, Lauretta Onochie, others for contempt

     President Muhammadu Buhari
A Federal High Court in Abuja has warned President Muhammadu Buhari; Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; the Senate of the National Assembly; Mrs. Lauretta Onochie and Chief Samuel Ogbuku on the consequences of flouting an earlier restraining order.

In a notice of consequences of disobedience to order of court dated December 23, 2022, the court gave a warning to President Buhari, Lawan, Onochie and others.
‘’Take notice that unless you obey the directions contained in this order, you will be guilty of contempt of court and will be liable to be committed to prison,” the notice read.
The court also stopped President Buhari from swearing in Ms Onochie and Ogbuku.

The duo were last week screened and confirmed as respective chairman and Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

The court had earlier granted an order stopping the National Assembly from screening and confirming the nomination of Onochie and Ogbuku.

The presiding judge, Justice J. K. Omotosho, instructed that all actions on the matter be suspended pending the determination of the suit.

Among other things, the originating summons marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2294/2022 is seeking a restraining order on the National Assembly from screening and confirming the duo.

The plaintiffs, Chief Edward Ekpokpo Esq., and Victor Wood who are both representing the Itsekiri Leaders of Thought and Mr Edward Omagbemi who is presenting Omadino Unity Forum all on behalf of the Itsekiri ethnic nationality are challenging the nomination on the grounds that it is the turn of the Itsekiri nationality to occupy the positions.
The first to sixth defendants in the suit are President Muhammadu Buhari, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; the House of Senate, Mrs Lauretta Onochie and Chief Samuel Ogbuku.

The suit filed by Ama Etuwewe SAN & Co., demands that the provisions of the NDDC Act should be followed in the process.

It maintained that it is the turn of the Itsekiri ethnic nationality to produce the NDDC board chairman and MD as arguably the biggest oil-producing community in Delta State.

Adjourning the matter to January 11, 2023, for further hearing, the presiding judge, Justice J. K. Omotosho, upon reading the affidavit and hearing the counsel to the plaintiff, declared

“That leave is hereby granted to the plaintiffs to serve the 5th and 6th defendants with the originating processes in this suit by substituted means to wit by advertising the processes in at least one national newspaper circulating within the jurisdiction of this to court and to deem the same as proper service.

“That an order is hereby made that no party in this suit shall take any step or act or action that may make the outcome of the pending motion on notice for injunction Dated and filed December 12, 2022, nugatory.

“That any act or step or action taken in this order to make the outcome of the said motion on notice dated and filed December 12, 2022, nugatory shall be a nullity.”

Despite the court order, the Senate on Tuesday confirmed Onochie and Ogbuku as NDDC chairman and MD respectively.

Brother to late Bimbo speaks on why his sister put fire on her matrimonial home that eventually led to her death

Oyindamola Martins who is the younger brother of late Bimbo Ogbonna, wife of auto dealer Ikechukwu Ogbonna aka IVD, has given details of how his sister put fire to her matrimonial home that eventually led to her death
In an interview with OAP, DaddyFreeze, Oyindamola said after many years of sadness, physical and emotional trauma, the late Bimbo recently decided it was time for her to walk out of her marriage but she did not want to walk away empty-handed. He said Bimbo told him that she had “sacrificed” her life for her husband, IVD and that she made him who he is today and cannot just walk away.

Oyindamola said Bimbo asked her husband to give her the documents of their property in Lagos so she can take possession of the property but he refused. He said Bimbo then vowed to burn the house so that both of them would not have it.

”She said since this is the only house we have, let us burn it so the two of us would leave with nothing”

He said Bimbo poured kerosine on herself and then threatened to burn herself but IVD who was home at the time failed to persuade her not to do so. He said Bimbo then set fire to their curtain and held on to IVD but he allegedly pushed her into the burning curtain which consumed her. She got 100-degree burns.

As she was lighting up the whole house, she poured kerosine on her body and was like let everything just end.  When she did it, she stopped for a while and went round the house. He was not saying anything. He was like ‘if you want to die, die’. ”

Oyindamola said at this point, Bimbo set fire to their curtain.

”As the curtain was burning, she now jacked him and was like you will give me this papers today..He pushed her off his body and this got her into the curtain.”

Oyindamola said Bimbo suffered 100-degree burns on her body.

”She suffered from a hundred degree burns. That takes like about of a couple of minutes to get 100 degree burns. When she was on fire, her husband was right in front of her doing nothing.”

He said Bimbo was the one who ran out by herself and asked for help to be taken to any hospital. He said she was rejected by 10 different hospitals before they finally found one where she was admitted.

On allegations that Bimbo helped IVD carry out some ritual exercise, Oyindamola said he cannot confirm that but it is something Bimbo could have done because she loved him so much.

He also said that he isn’t sure if IVD has HIV or not.

Falling Naira: EFCC Threatens To Arrest Dollar Hoarders

Chairman of the anti-graft agency, Abdulrasheed Bawa, made this known on Friday while meeting representatives of Bureau De Change operators in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Nigeria's anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has made a new threat.

The agency threatened to arrest Nigerians hoarding dollars and other foreign currency.

Chairman of the anti-graft agency, Abdulrasheed Bawa, made this known on Friday while meeting representatives of Bureau De Change operators in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The meeting was sequel to the anti-graft agency’s ongoing efforts to check the rising cases of foreign exchange speculations, which had brought pressure on the value of the naira.

Bawa warned those involved to desist or risk arrest as a major offensive against the speculators was under way, adding that the EFCC had intelligence linking some persons and organisations to the hoarding of foreign currencies especially the United States dollars in commercial cities across the country.

He said, “The commission has intelligence linking some persons and organisations to the hoarding of foreign currencies especially the United States dollars in key commercial cities of Kano, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Enugu and Calabar.

“We, however, warn those involved to desist or risk arrest as a major offensive against the speculators is under way.”

The EFCC had intervened by raiding some Forex markets in Abuja, which saw the currency return to its pre-speculated value.

Bawa noted that the meeting was called to fashion out a collaborative stakeholders’ response to brazen foreign exchange speculation especially at the parallel market which was hurting the country’s monetary policy by instigating a decline in the value of the naira.

The anti-graft agency noted that similar meetings are planned for other Bureau de Change operators in other major commercial cities across the country’s including key players, regulators and operators within the Nigerian financial sector.

Goodluck Jonathan Leads Election Observation Mission To Kenyan Elections

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has departed Nigeria for Nairobi on Friday to monitor the elections in Kenya.

The ex-leader is leading a team of observers to the country’s general elections that will be held on August 9.

Jonathan is the Head of the Electoral Observation Mission of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA).

His spokesman, lIkechukwu Eze said the EISA team comprises 21 short-term observers drawn from Civil Society Organisations.

The delegation comprises election management bodies and representatives of the academia from across Africa.

Eze noted that observers will be deployed in all the regions and specifically in ten counties in Kenya.

They will observe the final stages of the political parties’ campaigns, Election Day procedures and results from the aggregation processes.

Their assessment of the electoral process will be guided by the principles set out in the 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.

“It will also be guided by the 2002 OAU/AU Declaration of the Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa, among others”, the statement added.

The EISA Electoral Observation Mission would issue a preliminary statement on its findings at a news conference on August 11.

Three feared dead in Delta as car rams into cows

Three persons have been reported dead as a Toyota Camry car rammed into two big cows along the refinery road in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

The incident is causing serious tension within the area, DAILY POST can report.

Security Operatives have mounted surveillance in the area with a view to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

It was learnt that the vehicle driving along the dual carriageway rammed into the cows(2) and veered off the road leading to the death of three occupants.

Police Debunk Viral Video Of Kidnappers’ Den In Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force on Saturday debunked reports claiming the existence of a kidnappers’ den in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Force Spokesperson, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed this through his Twitter page after videos indicating such information went viral.

Several videos shared on the internet showed a burning bush area along the Goodluck Jonathan expressway, allegedly indicating the presence of suspected kidnappers/criminals hibernating in such areas to attack their victims.

The videos claimed that these criminals attack innocent commuters whose vehicles may have broken down along that route, robbing them of their belongings, and escaping into the bush.

Those who captured the video also claimed that the flame from the burning bush was a result of the police destruction of a kidnapper’s hideout discovered in the axis.

Another video also showed two gruesomely injured criminals, suspected to have died from the raid operation, but Adejobi debunked the content of the videos.
He tweeted: Fake News: No kidnappers den was discovered near the NPF Headquarters, Garki Abuja. Not at all. The news or video being shared was mere misinformation and a mischievous act of the enemies of the state to continually create fears in the residents of FCT and Nigerians in general.

“However let me reiterate that the police command in the FCT, on the directive of the IGP, has embarked on an aggressive raid of black spots and destruction of some shanties that might be hideouts for criminals in Abuja.

“So no cause for alarm as we have taken necessary steps to decimate activities of hoodlums and criminal elements in the FCT and across the length and breadth of Nigeria. Thanks.”

The FCT Police Command on August 3, said it carried out a raid on untended bushes and abandoned structures within the city centre and suburbs.

The command had also debunked claims of a kidnapper’s den within the territory, thus, advising its residents to go about their daily activities.

It vowed to adequately police the city, which has palpably been clouded by panic and the fear of terrorist attacks .
Checks by THE WHISTLER showed that there has been an increase in the surveillance of the city by operatives of the police.
Dark spot areas like Berger bridge, Sheraton Wuse Zone 4, Central Mosque and the AYA barracks areas of the FCT are manned by more security operatives conducting stop and search although not as thorough, considering the number of fleeing inmates after the Kuje Corrections jailbreak.

Police operatives only flag down vehicles, check their occupants with a security touch light and ask them to move on afterwards.

Since the jailbreak at the Kuje Correctional Centre over a month ago, the city alongside neighbouring states has been tensed, coupled with the various intelligence by security agencies of plans by terrorists to attack North Central and the North West States.
Consequently, the Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba directed a ban on motorcycles, while the FCT command banned the unauthorised flying of drones within the city.

Kogi government on the other hand had placed a ban on the use of facemask in the state while Benue Governor Samuel Ortom had pledged to purchase Ak-47 and other riffles for the new state’s security outfit. Other states are implementing measures to secure their residents.

IPOB Attacks Hausa Community In Imo, Kills 7 Members

Suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, have killed seven persons in an attack on Hausa community in Oroge, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.

Confirming the attack to DAILY NIGERIAN on Friday, the Hausa community leader (Sarkin Hausawa), Auwal Bab-Sulaiman, who represents Northern Community in the Council Traditional Rulers in the state, said the incident took place on Monday night.

According to him, eight people sustained injuries during the attack and are currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Center, Owerri.

“They shot at six people and beheaded one person and took away the head, eight people sustained injuries and were rushed to the Federal Medical Center Owerri because Oroge community is just about 10 minutes drive to Owerri town,” he disclosed.

Mr Sulaiman added that the gunmen returned to the community on Wednesday but were repelled by the police.

“After killing our people on Monday, they came back again on Wednesday to attack but luckily the police were able to foil the attack and killed two of the gunmen,” said Mr Suleiman.

The community leader added that the attack had caused panic in the community as many people have fled their homes out of fear of another attack.

While noting that those kiilled had been living in the community for over 20 years, Mr Suleiman explained that the head of traditional rulers in the state had sent a delegation to sympathize with members of the Hausa community over the incident.

When contacted, the state commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, said the police are currently investigating the incident.

According to him, the attack was a pure act of criminality which didn’t target the Hausa community.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of Northern Elders Forum, NEF, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, had condemned the alleged targeting and killing of Northerners in the Southeast region of the country.

Writing on his Twitter handle on Friday, Mr Baba-Ahmed said such heinous crimes, if not not abated, could worsen community relations in other parts of the country.

The elder statesman added that politicians who would need the support of Northerners in the 2023 general elections should immediately condemn the acts.

“It is very dangerous because it could worsen community relations in other parts of the country.

“We need to hear clear and emphatic condemnations from those who want our votes,” Mr Baba-Ahmed tweeted.

Alleged Certificate Forgery: Court Sets Date For Tinubu’s Hearing

Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has fixed September 7, to hear a suit seeking to nullify the candidature of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, over an alleagtion of certificate forgery.

The case was filed by four chieftains of the APC namely; Memuna Suleiman and Jigo Mohammed Garba, Ofodu Anthony and Ibiang Miko Ibiang.

They instituted the action against the electoral body, the 1st defendant, along with the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National Assembly and Attorney General of Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice as the 2nd, to 5th defendants respectively.

The appellants have asked the court to bar Tinubu who is the flag bearer of the leading political party, APC from participating in the forthcoming 2023 presidential election alleging that the information the latter submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the presidential candidate of the party is false.

The vacation judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed has, however, fixed the date for the hearing.

Delete these four apps immediately, Android users warned

The apps were found to be hidden dangerous malware called Joker.

If you use an Android, you might want to take a quick inventory on the apps you have installed on your device. This is necessary because Google Play Store has removed four suspicious apps , but you could be one of the 100,000 people who had already downloaded them.
What are they?
The applications that were removed from the Play Store include the generic named Smart SMS Messages , which has been downloaded 50,000 times, The Sun reports. The others, also bearing unsuspecting names like Blood Pressure Monitor, Voice Languages Translator and Quick Text SMS , had each been downloaded over 10,000 times.
Experts at Pradeo, who discovered the malicious apps say they contain a piece of malware called Joker which can secretly subscribe you to paid services with premium text and calls.
All of these apps are programmed to install other applications on users’ devices, acting as dropper to potentially convey even more dangerous malware. By using as little code as possible and thoroughly hiding it, Joker generates a very discreet footprint that can be tricky to detect.
You would be none the wiser if you install these apps, because the subscription and related charges all happen in the background.
Do this to protect yourself
These are just the latest apps to be discovered as containing malware. According toThe Sunarticle, the four add to the thousands of malicious apps being created over the past three years to steal from people.
You should go through your apps and see if any of the four listed above is on your device. If so, you are advised to delete them immediately . Pradeo reiterated:
Users are advised to immediately delete these applications from their smartphones and tablets to avoid fraudulent activities.

If You Use Gas Cooker, Beware Of These Mistakes That Can Lead To Explosion

As you might have guessed by now, gas explosions happen more often than you think they do. There are both good and bad things about using gas to cook, but they should not be overlooked. Gas is one of the fastest ways to cook. The kitchen isn’t like other rooms that are used for relaxing.

Having to cook for the family after work may be a time-consuming thing for us to do. Or, on special occasions, you could use it to make cupcakes or serve a big party at home with a lot of people coming over. Many of us forget to follow proper kitchen safety rules amid all the hurry.

If you cook with gas at home, here are some things to avoid.
As a last resort, you can use a flashlight on your lighter or your cell phone to check your gas stove. Use gas stoves, and don’t do this. It’s important to shut off the gas valve right away if the gas stove starts to leak.

You also need to open the door to let the gas out. There is no way you should use lighters, fans, or phones near a gas stove. They can get very hot and be very flammable.

Placing flammable objects near a gas stove.
The heat from a gas stove burner can burn things that are close to it, like flammable things. During the time that the gas stove is on, plastic utensils or jars, foil paper wrappings, and air-tight glass containers must be kept at least a few feet away from it.

Most people make the mistake of putting things on burners that aren’t being used. The safest thing to do is not put anything on the burners and keep flammable things away from the stove.

Filling your gas tank to the brim.
Stop doing this. This is another thing you should stop doing! Putting gas in an empty gas cylinder to the brim could cause it to leak gas, which puts you at risk of a gas blast.

Putting the gas cylinder in the wrong place.
Putting things in the wrong place can cause gas-related accidents and even death. There are a lot of things you need to think about when it comes to Positioning. To be safe when cooking with cooking gas, always keep your gas cylinder on a stable and firm surface, and be sure to place it vertically. This means that the bottom of the cylinder should be on the surface, and the regulator side should be facing up.

Teenager threatens to commit suicide if Buhari does not resign

By Bashir Bello
A teenager, Hamza Yahaya has on Friday threatened to commit suicide from popular Kofar Nasarawa flyover bridge in ancient city of Kano if President Muhammadu Buhari does not resigns.

Hamza’s action created a scene under the bridge linking to the Emir of Kano’s palace and State road as passerby stopped by to catch a glimpse of the scenario.

It was gathered that the one man protest could not be unconnected to the economy situation or hardship in the country.

It took the intervention of firemen to rescue Hamza from the pavement of the bridge.

An eyewitness and a resident Kofar Nasarawa, Abdullahi Madugu who confirmed the development to Vanguard said he was on his way to attend the Friday Juma’at prayers when he stormed over the scene of the incident.

According to him, “I was rushing to attend the Juma’at prayers around 1:30pm when I saw large crowd of people gathered watching a boy who climbed the bridge (popular Kofar Nasarawa bridge) and threatened to commit suicide or President Muhammadu resign.

“They (people around and even the firemen) pacified him to come down but he insisted that he would not come down. I heard him saying this with my own ears. He is not a small boy. This may be as a result of situation of day to day activities.

“It was one Malam Musa (who move about selling clothes) that drew the attention of the fire service who deployed their men and rescued the boy,” Madugu said.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif denied claims that Hamza threatened to commit suicide or President Buhari resigns.

“We got a distress call around 1:40pm about one Hamza Yahaya, 25-year-old who was found on a pavement of a bridge.

“He told us he doesn’t know how he got in there.

“He told us he is a resident of Sharada area of the state and that he ran away from their house to the area some three months ago because their neighbor sent him on errand with N4,000 and he spent the money.

“He is about 15 years old and can’t say such (commit suicide or President Buhari resigns) but the claims were by people around who coined the story along that line giving previous experiences.

“Our men deployed tactics and safely rescued the boy from the pavement. We handed him over to one SP Rabiu Tale at the Kwalli Police Division to investigate the matter,” Yusif said.
When our correspondent contacted the spokesperson of Kano Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna promised to investigate the matter.

Adeleke forged certificates, Oyetola tells tribunal

Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State on Friday asked the Election Petition Tribunal in Osogbo to nullify the election of the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ademola Adeleke.

According to the governor, the election was fraught with certain irregularities.

He also said that Adeleke ought not to have been declared winner as he was not qualified to have contested the election in the first place, having submitted forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commision.

Saturday PUNCHreported that Adeleke was returned elected by the INEC, after defeating his closest challenger, Oyetola, and 13 other candidates, scoring a total of 403, 371

Oyetola got 375, 027 votes and won in 13 Local Government Areas of the state to come second in the election.

A member of Oyetola’s legal team, Kunle Adegoke (SAN), in an interview with Saturday PUNCH immediately after filing the petition in Osogbo said the governor has assembled 50 lawyers including 10 Senior Advocates of Nigeria, listing 13 grounds on which premises Adeleke should be disqualified.

Other key members of the legal team included Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Chief Akin Olujumi (SAN), Prince Biodun Layonu (SAN/, Muritala Abdulrasheed (SAN).

Adegoke said the election in many 749 polling units were fraught with irregularities.

The legal team, he said, have established by the petition that the election in those 749 polling units across 10 Local Governments in Osun State was characterized by irregularities pertaining to over voting.

Adegoke said, “We have nothing less than 50 lawyers, including 10 SANs that we cannot list all of them, so we have listed about 20 lawyers in the petition. We have 13 reliefs. What we are contesting is that the election is fraught with certain irregularities by which the person declared winner ought not to have been declared and the petitioner, Alhaji Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola ought to have been declared the winner on the ground that Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke was not qualified to have contested the election in the first place, having submitted forged certificate to INEC.

“The second is that the election in 749 polling units was fraught with irregularities and the election in those units ought to have been nullified. All the polling units mentioned are in 10 Local Governments, out of 30.

“So, if the election in those units is nullified and the votes are cancelled, then Alhaji Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola will have comfortable requirements of the constitution to be declared winner of the election.”

Asked when the trobinal would commence sitting, Adegoke said he does not know.

“We don’t know yet but now that we have filed, it is expected that once the PDP is served, their lawyers will file their own defence then we will file a reply to their defence. That is when the tribunal will be able to give a date.

“Except if either of the two parties have an application that requires urgency, only then can the Tribunal have an emergency sitting but as of now nobody knows the date”, he said.

Adegoke had on July 19 toldThe PUNCHthat Oyetola may line up over 50 lawyers to contest the declaration of Adeleke as winner.

He had said, “We are still reviewing documents and the legal team is actually working. In an election of this nature, the documents will be so many; so it is important to look at them critically before we take a decision and that is exactly what we are working on right now.

“Dr Biodun Layonu (SAN), is the leader of the team. The legal team is not complete yet because there are so many others that will still come in.

“In the meantime, the two members of the legal team we can reveal is Dr Biodun Layonu and Kunle Adegoke. Others that may come in are people, we may not know but as soon as we are ready to move, we will notify the press.

“The membership can’t be determined as many lawyers are interested in joining the team. You know election petition is a special case. So, we allow as many lawyers that are interested to come in. We may run into 50 or more membership.”

When contacted for reaction, the Chairman, Media Management Team of Osun PDP, Prince Diran Odeyemi, said the party was not losing sleep over the petition.

According to him, many of APC leaders that were saying that the result of the election should be challenged before the tribunal, lost election in their wards, saying APC should have adopted the spirit of sportsmanship regarding the result of the poll.

“It is so unfortunately that APC did not believe in the spirit of sportsmanship. We would have expected them to congratulate Adeleke. Many of them, who are championing the cause of tribunal lost in their polling units and their wards.

“We wonder what they want to take to the Tribunal now. We are not afraid or losing sleep, Oyetola can’t win. We will meet them at the tribunal. Regarding the allegation of forged certificate, there is nothing like that. They are only looking for an avenue to come back to government through the backdoor. PDP is a thorough political party that looks at all the certificates presented by the candidates,” Odeyemi concluded

“This is unbelievable. God should please come to our rescue. The government should please rise up to the occasion. Things are getting out of hand. I don’t know if they want us to run away from our homes. It is now like a way situation. God
please help us.

Another source told our correspondent that one of the slain officers was only two weeks old in the force.

He said, “One of the officers killed is a new recruit. He is not more two weeks he became a police officer after the passing out parade.

Our correspondent saw gory pictures of the attacked division and some officers lying dead in the poll of their blood.

Another source told our correspondent that policemen drafted from outside the division had taken over the area and the state commissioner of police, Muhammed Berde, was being expected.

The spokesperson for the police in the state, Micheal Abattam, did take his calls when contacted. He had yet to respond to messages sent to his mobile lines as of the time of filing this report.

Military Airstrikes Kill Notorious Boko Haram Leader, Alhaji Modu, 27 Others

Troops of the Air Task Force (ATF), Operation Hadin Kai, have neutralised another notorious commander of Boko Haram terrorist group, Alhaji Modu, also known as ‘Bem Bem’.

Modu was killed alongside 27 other terrorists in Borno State.

This comes as the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, charged Nigerian Air Force (NAF) operational Commanders to ‘show no mercy’ and ensure they employ maximum firepower against terrorists posing security threats in the country.

‘Bem Bem’ and his fighters were killed on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 by the military airstrikes on Mandara Mountain in Gwoza local government area of Borno State.

An Intelligence report obtained by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and Security Analyst in the Lake Chad region from top military sources and made available to LEADERSHIP on Sunday, said a battle damage assessment has indicated that the air interdiction had recorded devastating impact as many jihadists were killed while others were severely wounded.

Sources reportedly said the the operation followed credible intelligence reports indicating that the Boko Haram fighters were converging in large numbers with the intention to conduct attacks.

‘Bem Bem’ was a popular drug baron who rose from an armed robber to Boko Haram kingpin.

He took part in the displacement of Bama town in 2014 and the killing of hundreds of people before declaring it as the town as a caliphate.

BREAKING: Terrorists Threaten To Abduct President Buhari, Flog Train Victims In Fresh Video

The convoy of an advance team of the president was attacked on its way to Buhari’s hometown of Daura ahead of Sallah.
Just a few weeks after the convoy of Nigeria's number one man, President Muhammadu Buhari was attacked by terrorists in Katsina State, the terrorists have issued a threat to abduct the number one citizen, according to Daily Trust.

The convoy of an advance team of the president was attacked on its way to Buhari’s hometown of Daura ahead of Sallah.

Two persons sustained injuries in the attack, which the presidency said was repelled.

The attack on the convoy happened on the day when the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) invaded Kuje Prison in Abuja and freed over 800 inmates, including all the terrorists in detention.

Daily Trust had reported how the train abductors jubilated when the Kuje inmates were released.

In a new video seen by Daily Trust, the terrorists who abducted over 60 passengers of the Abuja Kaduna train on March 28, threatened to abduct and kill Buhari and Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai.

The terrorists also boasted that they would destroy the country, kill the remaining passengers in their custody and sell out the others.

Some passengers were released after reportedly paying N100 million each.

One of the terrorists threatened that unless the government comply with their demands, they would turn the area into an abattoir.

“This is our message to the government of Nigeria and just as you have seen these people here, by God’s grace, you will see your leaders; your senators and governors will come before us. These ones you are seeing here, we will keep some as our slaves and sell them off just as our Imam told you in the past,” he said.

He further stated in Hausa: “Just like the Chibok girls that were sold off, we will equally sell these ones as slaves. If you don’t adhere to our demands, we will kill the ones we need to kill and sell the remaining. By God’s grace, El-Rufai, Buhari, we will bring you here.”

Heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong wind and flooding on Saturday wreaked havoc in different parts of Lagos metropolis.

A number of houses and roads were submerged by the flood caused by rain that lasted several hours in different parts of the state.

Sections of Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway were cut off on both sides by the flood, leading to a gridlock. Awolowo Road in Ikeja area of the state was initially rendered impassable by flood that receded hours after the rains subsided.

Many road users who had hit the roads in Eid-El –Kabir celebration mood were forced to return home or seek alternative routes, while others remained at the spot, waiting for the flood to abate.

It was gathered that emergency responders rescued three persons from a Lexus Jeep that was swept away by heavy flood around Oyatoki area of Agege, Lagos State.

According to a statement signed by the Zonal Coordinator, South-West, National Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, on Saturday in Lagos the incident involved two vehicles, a Lexus Jeep carrying three persons and a Toyota with three occupants.

20 senators set to dump APC, party’s majority under threat

The majority control of the  All Progressives Congress in the Senate is currently under threat as no fewer than 20 APC senators have concluded plans to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party and others.

The PUNCH learnt that the APC, which had earlier lost 13 senators to the opposition parties, might lose more parliamentarians aggrieved for losing their return tickets to the National Assembly during the party primaries.
It was gathered that the party leaders were worried that if the rate of defections continued and the opposition PDP gained more members, the ruling party might lose its majority status in the Senate.

During Wednesday’s plenary, Senator Dauda Jika representing Bauchi Central, announced his defection to the NNPP, bringing the number of APC senators to 67.

Currently, the five minority parties in the upper chamber have 43 senators with the PDP boasting 39 senators, while the Young Peoples Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Labour Party and the New Nigeria People’s Party have four senators.

To stem the gale of defections, the National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Adamu, met with the APC senators behind closed doors at the National Assembly complex, Abuja, some minutes past 2 pm on Wednesday

Adamu, who first went to the office of the  President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, for a brief meeting before the general meeting, said that the party was worried by the wave of the defections among the APC senators.

Speaking to journalists after his meeting with the APC caucus, he noted that it was a usual occurrence during the election period but it was enough for any leader to worry over the loss of any member.

He stated, “The meeting with the senators was most fruitful. The issue of defection is an unfortunate development when it happens but this is a season where there are all sorts of behaviour in the political space and ours is not an exception.

“In every election year, this kind of thing gives cause for stakeholders to sneeze and Nigeria is not an exception so is the APC, not an exception. I don’t care about what is happening in other parties, my focus is on the APC. But we all know that the occurrence is not only happening in the APC, it’s happening across other political parties too. And because we are the ruling party, our problems are exaggerated before the public.”

Adamu also said he did not know if the problem of defection would persist in the party but he had met with his colleagues at the National Assembly and he believed the issue was surmountable.

He added, “There is no responsible leader that would not be worried when he loses one member not to talk of two. At the moment we are faced with the stark reality of our problems. I have committed my colleagues at the National Assembly to face the problem squarely and see the problem as solvable. We are in politics, I don’t know what would happen tomorrow, and nobody does.”

Meanwhile, a lawmaker who spoke to one of our correspondents on the condition of anonymity, stated that the party chairman had to come down to the National Assembly to dissuade the senators from defecting from the ruling APC.

According to the source,  not lesser than 20 senators intend to leave the APC  to other parties, particularly the PDP within the next week.

The source said, “The party chairman came to have a meeting with the APC senators because he said that they learnt through intelligence that not lesser than 20 more senators were planning to defect to other parties within the next one week.

“The chairman asked each of the aggrieved senators to lay bare their grievances which we all did one after the other. Having heard our problems, the chairman instructed that we put them into writing.”

The lawmaker also stated that Adamu promised that the party would look into the issues raised and do something about it as it was a dangerous time for lawmakers in the party to defect because it was the election year and such moves were grave for any political party.

The source added, “The chairman asked us all to put all of our complaints into writing after which the APC caucus leaders would sit with the National Working Committee and look into the issues raised.

“Senator Adamu further stated the party would then see what it can do to help the situation. He, however, stated that lawmakers who do not feel comfortable with the help provided by the parties can then leave. But leaving without proper consultations with the party sends a wrong signal of discord. It presents the party as if in disarray and without proper leadership.”

“This is an election year and it’s not good to present the party as having leadership issues,” the source quoted Adamu to have said.

The PUNCH reports that there has been a wave of defections across the APC senatorial seats.

A number of the APC senators had cross-carpeted to other parties due to their failure to secure a return ticket to the NASS with many of them alleging that their states’ governors hijacked the senatorial primary elections.

In the past week since the resumption of the plenary, not less than six senators have sent their defection letters to the Senate President.

They include the Majority Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi representing Kebbi North senatorial district, who defected to the PDP.

Abdullahi alleged that the democratic challenges and deficits in Kebbi State did not just start from the last congresses, but from July last year “when the governor illegally decapitated the state leadership of the party, imposed unelected ward, local government and state executives of the party.”

He stated in his defection letter to the Senate, “At a point, I thought of resort to the courts, but decided against that course of action after realising that political challenges require political solutions in the democratic arena where it is the people and not the judges who are the final arbiters.
“I came to this decision after a very hard struggle with my conscience and emotions. It is either to remain on the side of my people or to selfishly look the other way. All politics is local. I cannot therefore in good conscience, continue to work for the success of this administration at the centre while the people of my state, my primary constituency, continue to wallow in abject poverty and destitution under the misrule and manipulation of a despot.

“I have, therefore, decided to pitch my tent with the Peoples Democratic Party to join forces with my compatriots at home who are struggling against incompetence, imposition and violation of democratic norms, principles and practices.”

Also former governor of Kebbi State, Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), defected from the ruling APC to the PDP stating that his “predicated on the fact that there is no internal democracy in the APC.”

He alleged that the state’s governor, Atiku Bagudu, had  “bastardised, the party and electoral processes in the state which are now characterised by high-handedness and unfairness.”

Similarly, Senators Ahmad Babba-Kaita (Katsina North), Lawal Gumau (Bauchi South), and Francis Alimikhena (Edo North) also announced their defection from the ruling party on Tuesday at the plenary.

While Babba Kaita and Alimikhena defected to the opposition PDP, Gumau on the other hand, defected to the NNNP.

The notice of their resignation and defection was contained in three separate letters read during plenary by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, on the floor.

But, the senator representing Oyo South Senatorial district, elected on the platform of the PDP, Senator Kola Balogun, Tuesday formally defected to the APC.

APC Senate spokesman

The Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Ajibola Basiru, in an interview with Channels Television, allayed fears of the party losing its majority status.

Basiru noted that despite the gale of defections that had the APC caucus in the chamber, it had gained more members.

He said, “I want to first say that all politics are local. The politics of the State of Osun is different from national politics. I don’t know any of the existing National Assembly members in the State of Osun that has defected. So, if the argument is based on defection, I don’t see how the defections of somebody in Kebbi State or Katsina State will affect the fortune of my party in the State of Osun. ”

He claimed that the number of the APC senators had increased to 67.

On why the lawmakers were defecting, Basiru said, “As to the question of the people who have been defecting, they may have their reasons, some of them may be because they have lost their popularity in their party; it may be because of the peculiar challenges or what they faced in their state.
“All I know is that the South-West has spoken in Ekiti and will speak louder in Osun, to say that the PDP, to the extent that it does not even have regard for the cohesion and federal character nature of the country, and it does not even care about the feeling of the people of southern Nigeria in terms of power shift, would be roundly rejected in the election of July 16, 2022.”

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, did not respond to calls or attempted to answer the questions sent via WhatsApp.

However, a member of the National Working Committee, who craved anonymity, said that defection was normal in politics.

“It doesn’t mean that it will hamper the chances of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

“The real electioneering starts from September. We are not under any form of pressure or panic mode,” he said.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, described the defections as a welcome development.

He said “What happened today is a welcome development; it shows that Nigerians will begin to have legislators that will formulate laws that will change the narratives of insecurity, lack of employment and a purposeful representation. It shows that the party is the only hope for the people. We are hoping that more will still join our party.”

In his reaction, the National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, Yabagi Sani, said the senators’ action did not come as a surprise.

“It is democracy in action. People have the right to associate with whoever they want to associate with. The moment people see that their interests will not be advanced where they are, of course, they will change. There is nothing strange about what is happening. It happened before to the PDP when five chieftains including governors moved to the APC. I don’t think it is anything that is unheard of in this country. It is now left for APC to put its house in order,” he submitted.

‘APC defections  ominous’

Prof Sylvester Odion-Akhaine, a political science lecturer at Lagos State University, believed the recent defection is an ominous sign the APC must checkmate.

He added, “What we are looking at is a very complex 2023. In this case, we cannot assume that the APC and PDP, being dominant parties, will carry the day.  We are also seeing a very high power politics by the ruling oligarchy in Nigeria, realigning the way that undermines the power shift to the South.

“This is the indication because when people move from one political party to the other in the Nigerian context, it is unhealthy and symptomatic of the fact that we don’t have institutionalised political parties in Nigeria.

The permutation of either of them getting victory will be quite complex and tough. The current defection from Tinubu’s party is ominous for the APC,” he argued.

Also speaking, Mr Tonye Isokariari, said the defections were not unusual, adding, “People cross-carpet when they feel the party is not working for them. But is not the right thing, more people will also join the APC as much as people in the APC are leaving.”

Meanwhile, no fewer than 15 APC members in Kano State have defected to the NNNP.

They include a former governor of the state and now the Senator of Kano Central, Ibrahim Shekarau; a member representing Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya Federal, Constituency, Alhassan Rurum; member representing Takai/Sumaila Federal constituency, Shamsudden Dambazau and former member representing Kiru/Bebeji and former Executive Director of the Federal Housing Authority, Jibrin Kofa.

The former Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, it was gathered, was considering joining the NNPP.

Tough Times Ahead for Nigerians as US, UK, Others Policies to Make Goods, Debts More Expensive, Naira Weak

Nigerians may face difficult times in the next weeks as a result of US and UK interest rates increase, as well as Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine
From Naira depreciation to growing debt payment costs and expensive importation of petrol and other items these are some of the expected headaches.
In the recent week's US, UK have all announced increases in their interest rates in a bid to fight rising inflation
Aggressive interest rate rises by major central banks in the developed world are causing pain to Nigerian businesses, households and investors through costly loans, and weakened Naira.
The market outlook turned gloomier this week after the Bank of England and the Swiss National Bank followed the US Federal Reserve is pushing up interest rates to tackle soaring inflation.

US raised its interest rate to 1.75%, the UK to 1.25% and the Swiss government by 3%.
The rate hikes mean a stronger currency for the developed countries to the detriment of most of the world’s currencies including Nigeria's Naira .
According to Investopedia , higher interest rates mean higher returns for investors, meaning more foreign investors are likely to live in Nigeria in search of more as money goes where money grows.
Consequences of higher interest rates in developed countries for Nigeria
External loans to get more expensive
A major consequence of strong foreign currencies will have is the cost of payment of Nigeria's external debts.

Should the government resume its decision to collect another loan the interest rates will be higher.

A Higher borrowing cost is troubling particularly when you take into consideration that IMF is warning that the debt servicing could gulp 100% of federal government revenue.
It is not only government, corporations and institutions that borrowed in dollars may be put under extra strain and might be forced to increase goods to add to their earnings.

Cost of importation
Higher interest rates will mean Naira depreciation and more pain to importers.

Nigeria is largely an import-dependent country from petrol to machinery and raw materials.

The strengthening of dollars and other foreign currencies could mean more expensive importation and ultimately a higher cost of goods for Nigerians.

Legit.ng had earlier reported that in the first three months of 2022, Nigerians spent a whopping N5.9 trillion on importation.
This amount might not be enough to import a similar quantity of products in the next months.

Capital outflows
One obvious impact is that foreign investors will enticement of more investors to the US, UK others.

Already, Nigeria’s capital inflows hit a four-year low of $9.66 billion in 2020, before dropping to $6.7 billion in 2021, data from NBS report shows.
IMF calls on Nigeria to abandon the official exchange rate
Legit.ng had earlier reported that the International Monetary Fund is asking Nigeria to ditch the official exchange rate.
According to the IMF, the use of the official exchange rate is hurting the economy of Nigeria and asked the CBN to review its policies.
IMF also called for the Nigerian government to do away with fuel subsidy and use the funds in building infrastructure.

FG not serious about solving Nigeria’s power supply crisis —Akpatason

The Deputy Majority Leader of the House of Representatives and former President of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, Peter Akpatason, has said the government was not serious about solving the country’s electricity supply crisis.

In a chat with Vanguard, Akpatason lamented that the faulty privatisation of the assets of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, worsened the electricity shortage in the country.

He said: “The sellers of the assets of the defunct PHCN were the buyers and it ended up people selling to themselves and forcing the government to raise funds for them to fund their businesses.

“Yet, Nigerians are not getting benefits of privatisation as well as the investment that the government made.

“The first thing the nation should do to address the issue of power shortage is to have a strategic plan for increasing the power generation capacity as well as the distributive channels and then secure those channels to make sure that there are no interruptions, man-made interruptions. Unfortunately, I’m not sure that there is any clear master plan for the country at the moment.

“Sometimes ago, we were given the impression that the solution to power supply crisis was the privatisation of the various sectors in the power sector or the assets of defunct PHCN. Unfortunately and I believe very strongly that privatisation was not properly done.

“One would expect that government would try to quadruple the amount of power the nation is able to generate on daily basis and to invest more either through Public Private Participation, PPP, or any other means it can, to improve the distribution channels and ensure that power gets to the end-users or consumers. And also, protects the assets of the operators in the supply chain.

‘’What happened recently and the frequent crash or collapse of the national grid is a clear example of the unpreparedness of the operators and the actors charged with the responsibilities of protecting these assets.

“If there is vandalism that leads to maybe shutting down an aspect of the national grid or the entire national grid comes down, it causes very serious damage to the supply chain and Nigerians are made to suffer from it. Apart from ensuring effective distribution also, it is very important to make sure that we protect ourselves from vandalism as a result of the unwholesome activities of criminals.”

2023: Senator Shettima Selected As Tinubu’s VP, APC NWC Member Reveals

There are feelers that stakeholders in the North, on Monday, opted for Former Borno State governor, Senator Kashim Shettima, as running mate to the standard bearer of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu.

A source told Daily Independent that stakeholders in the region believes that the former Borno State governor is a better option than the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara and the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who were reportedly in the race.

Speaking under condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, the National Working Committee (NWC) member said that “after careful consideration we settled for Senator Kashim Shettima. He will give us the votes we need.”

Confirming the report, Dr Garus Gololo, an APC Chieftain commended the choice of Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate, adding that “the decision of the NWC will help the party to win the north.”

“This development means that before 12pm on election day, the APC will defeat Atiku and other opposition candidates, hands down. It’s a clear sign that we will win the 2023 elections. Nothing will stop us, Isha Allah,” he maintained.

Famous media Personality, Daddy Freeze has stated that if APC’s candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu wins the keenly contested Presidential election come 2023, that it would be a plus for the Nigerian youth and Nigerians in general.

Daddy Freeze assured him that despite their differences in supporting candidates, he would still be his friends and ‘drink’ partner..

“Baba you have the right to chose BAT who is a great man and a visionary leader. While I chose Peteru Obi. Different choices shouldn’t mean we can’t drink beer together.”
Daddy Freeze added, “One of the things Nigerian youths need to work on is freedom of political choice. I love Peter and I am Obidient. This doesn’t mean I don’t value Ashiwaju, his political majesty and his vision as a leader. I would vote for Peter and support him with whatever I can, but if BAT wins, it’s still going to be a plus for the youths and for Nigeria.

Let’s make this election fun and May the best man win…Let’s vote our respective candidates in love and peace..”

1 terrorist killed as police foil attack on Kaduna-Abuja Highway

A combined team of police and military operatives foiled a mission by bandits on the Kaduna-Abuja Highway on Monday.

The team killed one of the bandits, and recovered one AK47 rifle and nine of their operational motorcycles.

Police spokesman in Kaduna State, DSP Mohammed Jalige, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Kaduna.

He stated that the feat was another indication of successful and purposeful synergy between the police and the military in Kaduna State.

“On Monday, June 13 at 2:55 a.m. a team of Police Operation Puff Adder and that of the army’s Operation Thunder Strike on routine patrol along the Kaduna-Abuja highway encountered the bandits at Sabon Sara.

“An exchange of gunfire ensued as a result of which the friendly forces truncated the bandits’ mission forcing them to retreat into the forest as one bandit was neutralised.

“Upon a search of the general area, an AK47 rifle and nine bandits’ operational motorcycles were recovered,’’ he stated.

The police urged residents in the area to report people with suspected gunshot wounds to security agencies as “injured criminal elements will be hibernating around nearby communities to access healthcare services’’.

What to expect from 2023 presidential candidates based on their Zodiac Signs

An unexplored perspective on the candidates vying for the country’s topmost political position.
Some people are born leaders, but some aren't; and even if you're known to be the most respected zodiac sign, you might not necessarily be the best leader.
When we talk about what it takes to be a perfect fit for Nigerian presidency, it's usually a combination of logical and emotional qualities, while remaining ethical enough to not become a money-driven robot that is unresponsive to the pulse of society.

With the reveal of flag bearers for the 2023 presidential election, As we bring you an unexplored perspective on the candidates vying for the country’s topmost political position.
Atiku Abubakar- PDP - Sagittarius
Atiku Abubakar

Atiku’s birthday is 25th November so he is a sagittarius, one of the fire signs.
Fire signs are about energy, motivation, and are often quick to get inspired. A Sagittarius is idealistic but often over-promises and under-delivers.

Martin Van Buren, the 8th president of the United States, was said to have a "sunny disposition," which goes along with optimist traits common in Sagittarians. He faced numerous challenges during his presidency including a border dispute with Britain over Maine and New Brunswick. Van Buren sent an envoy to Britain to negotiate a treaty, which his enemies saw as weak diplomacy.

After the US fell into a financial panic in 1837, Van Buren proposed an independent treasury to manage federal funds, which passed, but his enemies again blamed him for the crisis. Maybe he was too enthusiastic to find fixes, or maybe he was too impatient to wait out the challenges, both common qualities in Sagittarians. Either way, he didn't deliver enough to get re-elected in 1840.

Atiku Abubakar has participated in every presidential election since 1993. For 29 years, he has held the presidential ambition close to his heart despite recording losses. While the optimism is inspirational, the fear of pulling a Van Buren lingers.

Peter Obi - Labour Party - Cancer
Peter Obi, 2023 Presidential Candidate
Cancers are known for their compassion, sensitivity, intuition and optimism and Peter Obi, born in July, falls squarely under this category. However, being a water Ssgn, Cancerians are known to be rooted, realistic, and are receptive to the feelings and opinions of others.
Revered as the Father of the Nation by the South Africans, Nelson Mandela was a statesman who rose to become the country’s first black head of state. He reconciled a nation divided along racial lines and dismantled the legacy of apartheid.

As a Cancer zodiac sign, Nelson was deeply loyal and could be relied upon to follow through. He went above and beyond to help those that he loved and Cancers are typically one of the most devoted zodiac signs. Nelson Mandela had a unique ability to empathise with people around him, and this kept people close to him.

In the same way, Peter Obi has attracted a loyal supporter base who believe that he could be counted on to fix Nigeria. However, with low self awareness, Cancers are overly sensitive, moody, and vindictive.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu - APC - Aries
     Bola Tinubu

Aries are spontaneous and courageous. They have a sense of adventure, are determined, and are good at initiating new projects. They have high energy and can initiate quick actions, sometimes to their own hurt. An Aries is likely to think after doing, rather than vice versa.

Tinubu, born in March, obviously wears his heart on for all to see. When Yemi Osinbajo, who Tinubu shares a godfather relationship with, declared his interest in running for president, the Jagaban was quick to publicly disown his godson. Tinubu may have felt really betrayed by the Vice President. At the APC primaries, while his victory speech intentionally played down on shading the VP, his body language towards the friendly opponent was that of passive aggression.

As an Aries, Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United states, was destined to be full of energy and impulsiveness. Jefferson's quick temper and impulsiveness found a voice in his advocacy for states' rights over that of the federal government as well as in his match of wits with John Adams.

As president, we can expect the Jagaban to be impulsive and energetic in making decisions. We can also certainly expect a president who will address the nation LIVE for real, with very interesting shades and media baits littered in his speech.
