'Coronavirus will be with us for a long time' - World Health Organization

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) has disclosed that Coronavirus will be around for a long time as most countries are still in the early stages of dealing with the deadly disease.

During a virtual press conference on Wednesday night April 22, Mr. Tedros said: 'Most countries are still in the early stages of their epidemics and some that were affected early in the pandemic are starting to see a resurgence of cases.

'Make no mistake: we have a long way to go. This virus will be with us for a long time.

He noted there has been progress in western Europe but said there were 'worrying upward trends' in early epidemics in part of Africa and central and South America.

The WHO's top emergencies expert Dr. Mike Ryan warned against opening up global travel too quickly, saying it would require 'careful risk management'.

COVID-19: Sanwo-Olu releases N13m for daily feeding of youths in 3 councils

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has released N13.8 million to three local governments for the execution of the daily feeding of 100,000 youths through local food vendors, as part of measures to cushion the effect of COVID-19 lockdown.

The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, told Vanguard this at the State House, Marina, after the governor briefed the media on COVID-19 update.

According to Ayinde, the exercise kicked off last weekend in three local government areas, namely, Ikeja, Agege and Alimosho. Tayo, who is the coordinator of the programme, said:

“The state government has commenced the daily feeding exercise. It has released N6.3 million to Ikeja Local Government Area, N4.5 million to Agege and N2 million to Alimosho.

“However, the chairmen of the six local governments that make up Alimosho promised to add N1 million each to the N2 million, making it a total of N8 million.

“We are doing this in phases, as we have the target to cover the remaining 20 local government areas, in the first instance before the lockdown expires.”

Lagos State Government has launched “Eko Telemed” initiative aimed to further protect the citizens and reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19.

The General Manager, Lagos State Health Management Agency, LASHMA, Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, who disclosed this via the online launch, said with effect from Wednesday, April 22, residents in the state would have access to highly-trained and experienced medical doctors for non-emergency primary care advice via voice or video call without going out from their homes.

Zamba said that residents who develop any non-COVID health issue during the lockdown period only needed to dial 08000EKOMED (08000356633) free toll.

According to her, the free toll line would enable residents to have direct access to non-emergency primary care via voice or video call and speak with medical doctors in any of the four major languages in Lagos State— English Language, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo.

Zamba said that doctors and case managers would be available 24 hours on Eko Telemed to provide medical services to the residents for a period of eight weeks, as the state continued to roll out its strategies for containing the COVID-19 pandemic.

She added that if further medical treatment is needed after due consultation with the medical doctors, non-COVID-19 cases would be referred to designated and empanelled healthcare providers under the Lagos State Health Scheme, LSHS, or where applicable, preferred healthcare providers.

But patients with high index of COVID-19 suspicion would be referred to designated testing sites and isolation centres in Lagos State through the COVID-19 HOTLINE 08000CORONA.

Zamba, who commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for approving the project, said that Eko Telemed provided by LASHMA is part of COVID-19 response, appealed to the residents to tap into the opportunity in order for the state government to further protect their lives and family members as well as contain the spread of the virus.

The 36 state governors in Nigeria have recommended a national lockdown over the next two weeks to further curb the spread of Coronavirus.

The governors also expressed concern over the rising infection among health workers in the country.

COVID-19 FEAR: Kano Residents Panic As Over 150 Persons Die In Three Days

Kano Residents have been thrown into fear after over 150 persons died under the space of three days, causing undertakers and grave diggers in the city to express deep concerns.

The dead bodies buried in three cemeteries across the eight local government areas of the state, heightened fears as residents suspect the deceased must have died as a result of a strange ailment.

The local governments affected so far are Kano, Nasarawa, Gwale, Dala, Ungogo, Fagge, Tarauni, Kumbotso and Municipal.

Speaking with SaharaReporters on Tuesday, Khalid Munir, a resident in Kano, said he was deeply concerned about the situation because cases of Coronavirus in the city were rising.

“Who knows what is killing people? The development is causing people to panic and no one knows what is going on.

“The index Coronavirus case for example went to a lot of places even Friday prayers before he was confirmed positive, so a lot of people might be walking around with Coronavirus and dying from it and not even know," he said.

Bashir Mohammed, one of the undertakers at the Dandolo Cemetery in Goron Dutse, Dala Local Government Area, also expressed his worries saying;

“This is worrisome, we are becoming overwhelmed by what we are seeing these days because to me the way people are dying is not ordinary."

Another undertaker known as Mohammed said between Saturday and Sunday, over 30 people were buried in the cemetery in contrast to maximum daily record of 10 burials previously.

Kano State has so far recorded 59 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as at Tuesday, a sharp increase from when the index case was first reported 11 days ago.

FG apologises for the violation of social distancing order at late Abba Kyari's funeral

The Federal government has apologised to Nigerians for the violation of the social distancing order at late Abba Kyari's burial.

Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19, Boss Mutapha, tendered the apology during the daily media briefing of the taskforce in Abuja on Monday evening, April 20.

Nigerians took to social media to blast the government after videos and photos from the burial of Abba Kyari showing how crowded it was, surfaced online. Many people turned out for the burial and several guidelines put in place by the government to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic were violated.

Boss Mutapha said it is regrettable that social distancing was not observed during the burial.

The PTD recognises regrettably the unintentional violation of the principles and protocols that form the core of our messages to Nigerians at teh funeral of the late Chief of Staff. These principles for emphasis include the guiidance provided on mass gatherings, social distancing, personal hygiene and restriction of movement. Lessons have been learnt and appropriate measures have been taken to close all gaps'' he said

COVID-19: 'Home ain’t where you were born, Home is where the leaders care about you' - Nigerian man says after receiving $2,290 from Canadian Government

A Nigerian man based in Canada has taken to Twitter to praise the Canadian government after they sent him $2,290 as financial support during the Coronavirus pandemic.

This comes after the Canadian government announced back in March that Canadians who are out of work because of the Coronavirus pandemic will be eligible for up to CAN$2,000 ($1,399) a month for four months.

According to @ChuksJaphet, he received a deposit of $2,000 from the Govt of Canada few days ago and another additional cheque of $290 as support just yesterday.

He wrote: 'Few days ago, we received a deposit of $2,000 from d Govt of Can , today we got another cheque of $290 as support. Meanwhile, all Nigerian Govt could say was come back home and I will bear d flight cost. Home ain’t where u were born. Home is where d leaders care abt u.'

Ignorance among Africans is the reason people like Bill Gates and his wife take us for granted. There maybe many reasons why we need to stay at home. But people have literally failed to understand that corona virus is real. An example of today's case is the Chief of Staff to the President of Nigeria who got the best medical care in Nigeria.

According to multiple sources, he got the best available ventilator stationed to him. The best doctors in Nigeria were assigned to treat him and yet, he still died.

Are you still complaining about hunger? Are you still complaining of alcohol and cigarettes? I guess you need to rethink well and sit well at home.

If you contract COVID-19, there isn't any chance that you might get the best ventilator. Chances are you are gonna die before you even realize what hit you.You probably wouldn’t make it to the hospital. That primary care center down your street may not be well equipped to treat you.

This is a lesson that you need to learn from, you don’t sit at home because the government says so. You are trying to make things better for you and your family. Please always sit at home for the fear of your life and that of your loved ones.

Many People recover from COVID-19, but you might not be that lucky in your own case.Let us be diligent. Wash your hands until scales start to grow on it. If In doubt, wash that hand again.

Lagos State Government Reveals Hospital Where Abba Kyari Died

The Lagos state government has revealed the hospital where former Chief of Staff to President Buhari, Abba Kyari, died of COVID-19 in the state on Friday, April 17.

A statement released by the state Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, says Kyari died at the First Cardiology Consultants in Lagos.

Following enquiries on the passing away of the Chief of Staff to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mallam Abba Kyari on Friday 17th April 2020, the Lagos State Government states that:

Mallam Abba Kyari died from complications of Coronavirus infection at First Cardiology Consultants in Lagos. This hospital is a Lagos State designated high care, biosecurity-compliant, COVID-19 facility, accredited by the Health Facility Management and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) of the Lagos State Ministry of Health.

As a basis for accreditation, First Cardiology Consultants established a separate specialist wing with staff dedicated to the treatment of complicated cases of COVID-19, under the supervision of the Lagos State COVID-19 emergency response team.

Former Chief of Staff to President Buhari, Abba Kyari, laid to rest (Photos)

The remains of Abba Kyari, former Chief of Staff to President Buhari, has been laid to rest.

He was interred at Gudu cemetery, Abuja on Saturday morning, April 18 according to Islamic rites.

President Buhari was not in attendance.

Coronavirus: All those who recently visited St. Edwards hospital in Lagos advised to self-isolate

Those who recently visited St. Edwards hospital in Ajah area of Lagos state, have been advised by its management to self-isolate after one of its patients tested positive for Coronavirus.

The patient who never provided information about previous contact with a COVID-19 case, was admitted at the hospital on April 11 with cardiac symptoms. He however underwent a Coronavirus test and turned out positive, after the hospital received a call from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on April 12.

St. Edwards hospital directed those who visited the facility between April 11 and April 15, to immediately self isolate, stay at home and avoid contact with people including their family (by staying in a room) for 14 days.

The statement reads;

“The Hospital received the team from NCDC, and sample was taken from the patient on that Sunday, April 12, 2020.

“NCDC communicated the result on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, which confirmed the patient to be positive and said they were coming to evacuate the patient.

“NCDC did not come on Tuesday but eventually came on Wednesday, April 15, 2020, and evacuated the patient.

“The hospital has been cooperating with NCDC, WHO and all other health agencies that have called or visited since the incident.

“The hospital had been decontaminated on April 15 working with NCDC and following the guidelines stipulated by NCDC. Though NCDC counselled that they can start normal work after one (1) hour of decontamination, the hospital decided to remain closed and reopen for business on Friday, April 17, 2020.

"In line with guidelines prescribed by NCDC, those who visited the facility between April 11 and April 15 should immediately self isolate, stay at home and avoid contact with people including your family (by staying in a room) for 14 days.”

Also making a clarification on Twitter, the hospital wrote;

“St Edward hospital does not treat covid 19 patients. I am a cardiologist. One of my hypertensive diabetic patient tested postive for covid19 and he was sent to the isolation centre according to protocol. Anybody can have covid19. We cannot start neglecting or sending away patients because we think they may have covid 19. Patient have to test positive before you can send them to the isolation centre. Unfortunately, the test takes about 3 days for the result to comes out. While you are waiting, you have to do your best as a doctor to keep the patient alive"

Six days after he went on self-isolation following the confirmation of his COVID-19 status, Abba Kyari, former chief of staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, issued a statement on his health.

There had been rumours about his health condition, with some even saying the president’s right hand man had been flown abroad in an emergency.

Some also said he had died but in a statement he personally signed, the deceased said he was looking forward to resuming at his desk.

He had said he was feeling well but would move to Lagos where he had made his own arrangement.

Below is the full statement:

"I am writing to let you know that on medical advice, I will transfer to Lagos later today for additional tests and observation. This is a precautionary measure: I feel well, but last week, I tested positive for coronavirus, the pandemic that is sweeping the world. I have followed all the protocols government has announced to self-isolate and quarantine."

"I have made my own care arrangements to avoid further burdening the public health system, which faces so many pressures. Like many others that will test also positive, I have not experienced high fever or other symptoms associated with this new virus and have been working from home. I hope to be back at my desk very soon. I have a team of young, professional, knowledgeable and patriotic colleagues, whose dedication has been beyond the call of duty, who continue to work seven days a week, with no time of the day spared. We will continue to serve the President and people of Nigeria, as we have for the past five years."

"I want to thank all our fantastic, talented and brave healthcare professionals, working across the country in such a difficult time; all the good Samaritans looking out for the most vulnerable in our communities; the key workers that will keep our country going through this; friends and family and often strangers, who have sent me such warm wishes and displayed such a generosity of spirit."

"We should be calm, measured and diligent – be meticulous in your hygiene, especially with cleaning hands, if possible stay at home or keep your distance. Listen to good advice from the proper authorities: pay no heed to quack cures or fake news from social media. President Buhari will do whatever it takes to protect the health and safety of our people and get the country back on its feet as soon as possible."

"Like the whole world, we are dealing with a new disease. Our experts are learning more all the time about coronavirus, what it does and how we can combat it. What we do know is that while some may become very sick, many others who contract the virus will not, and may have no symptoms at all.
