Six Conditions For Reopening Of Schools, Varsities — FG

Ahead of the reopening of universities and others, the Federal Government has listed six conditions to be met by each school.

It said the six conditions are to protect pupils and students against Coronavirus.

It also asked all heads of schools to start putting measures in place to meet the terms.

Among other conditions, the government is demanding decontamination of all schools and new class sizes which will accommodate social and physical distancing.

The Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba announced the conditions in Abuja at the 2020 Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB).

Nwajiuba said: “While we Iook forward to easing the Iockdown which will ultimately lead to re-opening of our campuses, I urge all the Heads of Institutions not to wait till the announcement on reopening before putting in place all necessary measures in compliance with the protocols and advisories of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

“All Institutions must have (1) Hand-washing facilities, (2) Body temperature checks (3) Body disinfectants at all entering points to their major facilities including the gates, hosteis, classes, offices, etc. (4) The whole premises of each institution must be decontaminated and (5) All efforts must be geared toward maintenance of the highest level of hygiene (6) Ensure Social] Physical Distancing in class sizes and meeting spaces.

“Let me seize this opportunity to commend institutions that responded promptly with different innovations, including the manufacturing of some of the facilities that are required to attend to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

“I am elated with the efforts that led to the production of Ventilator, Body Disinfectant, Hand Washing and Liquid Dispensers, Body Temperature Gauges, and many more. These are manifestations of the abundance of talents in the country and the result of research.”

The Minister pleaded with parents to bear the continued closure of schools with the government.

He added: “As a member of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, let me assure all compatriots that the Government is very much concerned about the long Iockdown of the nation’s education institutions in particular and the economy in general.

”The Federal Government is doing everything possible to ensure that both lives and livelihood are given the top most priority that they deserve.

“We are aware that we must be alive to make a living while at the same time we are conscious that we must have a livelihood to stay a life.

“The Presidential Task Force is working assiduously with facts and figures that mirror the reality of our current situation and circumstance. We are making use of them to respond to the challenges in such a way that we can limit and manage the negative effects of the Pandemic.”

In his opening address, the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede said:” Out of 1,159,977 candidates who sat for UTME in 2019, about 612,557 were admitted.

He said about 510,957 admission spaces were unused.

Executive Jets Services Limited, an airline suspended by the federal government for conveying music artiste, Azeez ‘Naira Marley’ Fashola for a concert in Abuja, has reacted to its suspension.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Nigeria’s Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika, had on Monday announced the suspension of the airline during a Presidential Task Force briefing in Abuja.

Sirika said that the flight that took Marley to Abuja was approved for a different purpose, to convey a service Justice from Lagos to Abuja and back, on official assignment. (Judiciary considered essential services).

He added that the Flight operator violated its approval and operations of the flight company have been suspended indefinitely and will also be fined. Sirika also noted that the Flight Captain will also be sanctioned for providing false information.

However, in a letter dated June 15, 2020, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Sam Iwuajoku, has apologized to the  federal government over what it described as a “mix-up”

Iwuajoku said he gave the approval for the flight thinking the passenger was the Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola.

In the letter entitled, “Re: Flight For 13/06/2020 Done By Executive Jets Services Ltd To Abuja”, and directed to Sirika, Iwuajoku explained that he did not know the said passengers were “a bunch of useless people”.

He said, “We hereby apologise for the above flight with your permit ref: FMA/ATMD/0175/V/V/1268 dated 11th June 2020.

“Please the flight was to carry a judge to Abuja on Sunday, 14th, June 2020 as requested and the permit was granted based on the application but unfortunately, when I called the Judge on Saturday morning to inform him that we have the permit, he then said he has reached Abuja already with a different flight that someone gave him a lift to Abuja.

“So, on Saturday morning, 13th June 2020, my staff called me that they have a charter flight to Abuja, and that the passengers are already in the lounge. As a rule, passenger manifests are always sent to me before departure.

“When I went through the manifest and saw FASHOLA BABATUNDE, I thought it was the Honourable Minister of Works going to Abuja with his men. So, we decided to do the flight since he is a serving minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I didn’t know that it was a bunch of useless people.

“We are very sorry for this mistake and we promise that this would not happen again.”

BREAKING: Godwin Obaseki Resigns From APC

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Newsflash247 reports.

The governor announced this on Tuesday after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Obaseki was disqualified from contesting the governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress slated for June 22.

Also, the Screening Appeal Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Saturday, upheld the disqualification of Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, from the party’s primary.

The decision followed a review of a report submitted by the party’s screening committee.

Chairman of the appeal panel, Dr. Abubakar Fari, who submitted the committee’s report to the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee, also revealed that only one out of the three disqualified aspirants appealed the decision.

“We looked at the grounds on which Obaseki was disqualified and I would like to say his disqualification was based on solid grounds,” Fari said.

It also noted that the Governor also owned two separate voter cards which was illegal.

The committee also said it found several inconsistencies in the forms Obaseki submitted.

Apart from Obaseki, Chris Ogiemwonyi and Mathew Iduoriyekenwen were also disqualified by the APC.

Mr Osaro Obaze, Dr Pius Odubu and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu are the three aspirants cleared to take part in the primary on June 22.

BREAKING: Senator Bayo Osinowo dies

The Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Bayo Osinowo is dead.

The lawmaker, popularly known as Peperito passed away on Monday morning.

He died on Monday after a brief illness at the age of 64.

A source close to the family confirmed the development to DAILY POST.

“The Senator has been suffering high blood pressure for years. It’s really not a secret, those close to him know this”.

Commenting on speculations that Osinowo died of coronavirus complications, the source said it might not be true.

“I don’t think so because Senator Osinowo has been very careful since the COVID-19 outbreak. He avoided meeting people”, he said.

He was elected Senator in 2019 and was subesequently appointed as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Industries.

Senator Osinowo had his primary education at St. Augustin Primary School in Ijebu-Ode and his Secondary Education in Issoyin Grammar School, Isoyin.

In 1977, he started his career as a Land Officer at the Federal Ministry of Works till 1979. He then became the Managing Director at NITAL International from 1986 to 2003.

Senator Osinowo became the Managing Director at NIMCO International Co. Ltd from 1990 to 2003. He also worked as Managing Director, at Extreme Piling and Construction Company Ltd and NIMCO Dredging Company from 1990 to 2003.

Osinowo began his political life in the second republic serving as a youth Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Osinowo was a four time honorable in the Lagos State house of assembly.

Another lady raped, murdered in Ibadan Church building

A student of the Oke Ogun Polytechnic, Saki has been raped and murdered.

DAILY POST gathered that the victim, Grace Oshiagwu was raped and murdered within a church mission building, located at Idi-Ori, Sasa-Ojoo, in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State on Saturday.

Our correspondent recalls that the incident is coming barely two weeks after the death of Barakat Bello who was recently raped and murdered in Ibadan.

Shomuyiwa Azeezat, another lady was also murdered by unknown assailants in the same local government area of the State.

Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Mr. Olugbenga Fadeyi, confirmed the killing.

Fadeyi said, “One Grace Oshiagwu ‘f’ aged 21 years, was macheted on her head in a church mission building at Idi-ori Area, Shasha, off Expressway by unknown assailant(s) today- 13/06/2020 about 3.00 pm.

“Investigation has commenced into the matter and the police tactical teams are on the trail of the assailant(s).

“While efforts are intensified, we want to continue to solicit for credible information from members of the communities around the area and the general public to unravel the mystery behind these dastard killings”.

COVID-19: NCDC alerts Nigerians over 11 symptoms

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has urged citizens to call their state hotlines for advice if they experience certain symptoms.

They include loss of taste/smell, body pain, headache, diarrhea, catarrh, etc.

The agency said this in a tweet on its verified Twitter page.

It read: “If you have COUGH or FEVER and 1 of these symptoms

Loss of taste/smell

Difficulty breathing

Diarrhea

Cattarh

Fatigue

Shivering

Body pain

Headache

Sore throat

“Please call your state hotline for advice.”

The hotlines can be found on NCDC’s website and social media pages.

NCDC announced 627 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday night.

Total Confirmed Coronavirus cases in Nigeria hit 13,464 after 663 people tested positive in 24 hours

Confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Nigeria has now hit 13,464 after 663 people tested positive on Tuesday, June 9, 2020.

According to the Nigeria Center of Disease Control ( NCDC ), 170 cases were recorded in Lagos, 108 in Ogun, 69 in Bauchi, 49 in Ebonyi, 33 in Edo, 30 in Rivers, 26 in FCT, 26 in Jigawa, 26 in Delta, 17 in Anambra, 16 in Gombe, 16 in Kano, 15 in Imo, 14 in Abia, 11 in Borno, 11 in Oyo, 8 in Plateau , 6 in Kebbi, 6 in Kaduna, 4 in Ondo, 2 in Niger, 2 in Katsina, 1 in Osun, 1 in Ekiti , 1 in Kwara and 1 in Nasarawa State.

Nigeria now has 13,464 confirmed cases of the viral disease. 4206 patients have so far been discharged and 365 deaths have been recorded.

Sanwo- Olu approves resumption date for civil servants

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed civil servants in the State to resume work on Monday, June 8.

Sanwo-Olu made the announcement during a media briefing on Thursday.

He said the civil servants to resume are grade level 13 and above, adding that grade 1- to 12 are to remain at home.

“ As regards public service, we are asking all of our officers on Grade Level 13 and 14 on the unified public service to resume work from Monday, June 8, 2020

“We are still holding back from Grade Level 1 -12 till further notice.”

The Governor had announced earlier that Mosque and Churches in the state will resume on June 19 and June 21.

The News Agency of Nigeria gathered that among those killed was the Divisional Police Officer in the town, two policewomen, and five policemen.

The other victim, a male civilian, died when a stray bullet hit him.

The armed robbers were said to have invaded the Police Station at about 1 pm and opened fire on all officers and men on duty.

The source told NAN that the Police Station was completely destroyed by the armed robbers who also set free all detainees in the detention facility.

The robbers later proceeded to the bank where they killed one of the Policemen on duty and carted away money.

An eyewitness, Segun Thomas, told NAN that the robbery operation lasted almost one hour.

Thomas said: “The robbers came in two vehicles – a bus and a car – with which they also escaped from the town.”

NAN learnt that the car, believed to have been snatched from its owner, was later abandoned around Kizito College, Isanlu.

William Aya, spokesman of Kogi State Police Command, confirmed the robbery incident and the invasion of the Police Station, but added that the casualty figure was “still hazy”.

Aya told NAN: “The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ede Ayuba, has dispatched the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operation to Isanlu to ascertain the true situation.”

Aya promised to brief the press “as soon as details are available”.

Sanwo-Olu reveals when schools might reopen in Lagos State

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said a decision on the reopening of schools in the state, will be made in the next two weeks.

Sanwo-Olu stated this during a media briefing on Thursday afternoon.

“In two weeks, we would make a decision on the reopening of schools,” he said.

According to Sanwo-Olu, “we are looking at the educational centres very differently”.

The Governor also made it clear that “the state government will enforce compliance with all safety precautions”.

Last week, the Lagos state Commissioner for Education, Folasade Adefisayo, said protocols were being put in place, to ensure the safety of students when school reopens.

Adefisayi also hinted that students might not need to come to school daily.

Lagos has the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nigeria with 5,440.
