Apo Six: 15 years after gruesome police killing, families still demand justice

Ifeanyi Ozor and Augustina Arebu could have been celebrating 15 years of marriage, if they were alive.

The event would have been colorful even with restrictions on public gatherings caused by the coronavirus pandemic, giving Ifeanyi’s flamboyant lifestyle, his immediate young brother, Elvis Ozor.

At just 25 and 22, when their love story was still budding, Ifeanyi and Augustina were gunned down in cold blood along with four of their friends by trigger happy police officers 15 years ago today in one of the most heinous extra-judicial killings Nigerians can remember.

The night of June 7, 2005, was meant to be a night of merrymaking for the potential couple and their friends. But Nigerians would later be riveted with the horrific news of their deaths in the hands of the policemen.

Brutally murdered

But life, as it was, for the families and loved ones of the victims – Ifeanyi Ozor, Chinedu Meniru, Augustina Arebu, Anthony Nwokike, Paulinus Ogbonna and Ekene Isaac Mgbe, would never be the same.

The crude reality has been tears. The night marked the beginning of month-long meetings, court appearances and adjournments, physical and emotional exhaustion, nightmares, and more deaths.

Worst still, families of the victims say justice is not yet served.

A decade and a half have passed but the gory memories of the murders have stayed with them. “Out of shock, my father had a stroke and died,” Edwin Meniru, the elder brother to Chinedu of the Apo six told PREMIUM TIMES.

Love story turned sour

Ifeanyi Ozor – the eldest of his five siblings – hails from Eziagu in Enugu State, South-east Nigeria, though the family was raised in Zamfara State, North-west Nigeria.

After years of apprenticeship, Ifeanyi and his four friends in their early and mid twenties had become car parts merchants at the Apo mechanics’ village, in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

They all met and became friends in Abuja so when Augustina, Ifeanyi’s new girlfriend, arrived from Benin that night of June 7, they all decided to give her an unforgettable treat.

“My brother’s relationship with Augustina was new but the way he talks about her makes me believe she is the one. He had the vibe of excitement and expectancy that evening,” Mr Elvis said.

The friends headed for their usual rendezvous – a lounge at Grand Mirage Hotel at Port Harcourt street off Gimbiya street, Garki, Abuja.

It was there that the then Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Danjuma Ibrahim, allegedly began making romantic advances on Augustina, Ifeanyi’s fiancĂ©.

It was her first visit to Abuja and her first meeting with her lover.

After a faceoff ensued when she turned down the love advances, Mr Ibrahim allegedly stormed out of the night club.

He went to the checkpoint at the end of the street and told officers on duty he had “sighted a group of armed robbers in the areas”, a report by the judicial panel of inquiry set up by former President Olusegun Obasanjo revealed.

When the six unwary victims, on their way home, arrived at the Gimbiya checkpoint in a Peugeot 406 car, Mr Ibrahim allegedly had the car blocked and ordered the officers to shoot the occupants after an argument.

Four of them, unarmed, died at the spot in a blaze of gunfire.

Anthony and Augustina, who survived the initial onslaught were ‘finished off’ in the wee hours of June 8 by two police officers who claimed, “they attempted to escape from custody.”

Augustina was equally strangled, evidence showed.

Shock, outrage

When Elvis, Ifeanyi’s younger brother arrived Apo market later in the morning, there was an unusual crowd. There was also a cold feeling. People spoke in low tones and threw awkward glances at him, he narrated.

“At first nobody said anything until a reliable friend called me aside and told me that my brother was shot. We then went to the Garki police station only to confirm that he was dead,” a teary Elvis said.

“Ever since then, I am yet to recover from the shock I felt that moment.”

The news of the incident drew immediate public outrage. A riot erupted across the city.

“When the news broke that particular morning, the whole Apo mechanic village was shut,” said Emeka Ani, an age-long friend of the victims. “There was no business for more than a week due to the crisis and riots that followed.”

“We believed in those boys. We knew they were innocent. We moved to all the police stations in Apo and Garki.”

Gory scene

PREMIUM TIMES cannot publish pictures of the bodies of the victims due to their mangled, gruesome state.

The police hurriedly buried them at the back of their station to cover up their tracks but a panel of inquiry ordered that they be exhumed months later so as to run an autopsy.

The autopsy found that they were shot at close range contrary to police claim that they were armed robbers, “who they engaged in a gun battle at a distance.”

Mr Meniru, who survived the first onslaught quickly called his elder brother, Edwin, to inform him what was happening but life was also snuffed out of him by the rampaging cops.

He was shot at close range in the mouth.

“There is nowhere else to look except at the bodies. There is a close-up of a face, gaping exit-wound at the temple,” Amobi Nzelu, the then-lawyer to the victims’ families, was quoted in a BBC article of May 5, 2009.

“Limbs and torsos covered in blood. Dead eyes stare upward. This is a human being, look what they (police) did.”

Justice denied

The judicial panel of inquiry found the police account that the victims were armed robbers to be false and recommended Mr Ibrahim and his men for trial.

The five accused officers and eight other police witnesses testified that Mr Ibrahim ordered the killings.

All the officers were placed on suspension.

After more than a decade of protracted court proceedings that left the victims’ families emotionally and financially drained, the “Apo Six” were pronounced innocent.

Two of the officers involved were convicted and sentenced to death on March 9, 2017, in a landmark judgment of the FCT High Court.

But the presiding judge, Ishaq Bello, said “there was not enough evidence to convict Mr Danjuma”, who allegedly ordered the shootings.

This will mark the beginning of another tortuous road to justice for the families who had rejected the judgment.

‘Reinstated, rewarded’

While they were making efforts towards appealing the case, the police confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that Mr Danjuma had been reinstated into the force.

It said the reinstatement was approved by the Police Service Commission which relied on the judgement of the court that freed him after finding him not culpable.

Mr Danjuma’s rank was restored, his accumulated salaries from June 2005, were also paid with plans to send him on a refresher course, a police memo published by Sahara Reporters showed.

In December of that year, he received double promotion.

From the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), he was promoted to Commissioner of Police and then to Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), according to a Daily Trust report.

The families see this as the height of injustice.

All moves made towards appealing the ruling were reportedly frustrated by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami.

The families resorted to their lawyer, Amobi Nzelu, who promised to find a way to appeal the case but has not done so.

Now an annual ritual

Meanwhile, the families and friends of the victims have resorted to holding a yearly ritual in their remembrance at the exact spot in Gimbiya junction which used to be a police checkpoint where the ‘Apo Six’ were killed.

“Today (Monday), we will observe our yearly ritual in remembrance of our loved once,” Elvis told PREMIUM TIMES Sunday evening.

“We will light seven candles, six will represent the ‘Apo Six’ while the seventh will represent God Almighty. We will sing praises because our happiness at the end of the day is that they were declared innocent.”

“From there, we will move to Nepa Junction and then to some orphanage homes.”

He said the families will keep pursuing the case because asides the fact that the man who ordered the shooting was freed, the families are yet to be compensated as recommended by the panel of enquiry.

“My brother Ifeanyi was the breadwinner of the family. We have not yet recovered since his death that is why we are not giving until justice is fully served,” Elvis said.

EndSARS: If The Government Was In Charge Of The Candle Light Service, They would Have Told Us That They Used Over N697 billion – Don Jazzy

The founder of Mavins Record tweeted “if it was this govt holding a candle light night for our heroes past now they will call billions billions. THIEVES”

Don Jazzy also shared an audio saying that the government would have used over N697 billion to hold the service and then once again called the government thieves.

Nigeria may shut down internet as #EndSARS protests continue

PHOTO: Falz and Runtown at #EndSARS protest in Lagos.

With Nigerians not backing down on protests for the reform of the police force and total disbandment of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad(SARS), there are speculations that the government might shut down the internet. Six days ago, a video of a fatal police shooting of a Nigerian man, sparked outrage and reignited a public call for the total dissolution of the controversial police unit in the country. The video caused large numbers of Nigerians including celebrities, politicians, and activists calling for justice using hashtags such as #WarOnSars, #EndSars, and #SarsAlert #SARSMUSTEND. With celebrities adding their voice to the #EndSARS campaign, it jumped to the top of global trend on Twitter and drew international support from celebrities and soccer stars like Kanye West, Trey Songs, Mesut Ozil and Marcus Rashford. Nigeria’s superstars, Wizkid and Falz who are also part of this generation of protesters, have been physically present in London and Abuja protests. The protests against the police have largely been organized on social media, fuelled by citizens sharing their experiences of police abuses and videos of brutal incidents, including the beating of civilians and the firing of live ammunition at protesters. The campaign moved from social media to the streets of Nigeria, with protesters demanding an end to the rogue police unit and a wholesome police reform. However, the protesters are not relenting despite the dissolution of the notorious police squad but have continued to protest noting the government’s ineffectual promises of police reforms and investigations in the past. The campaigners have also been able to organise funds to cater to their welfares during protest using digital payment platforms. But there are now speculations that the Nigerian government may to shut the protesters up by shutting down the internet since surreptitious move to divide the protesters have failed. Active protesters on and off social media have said unknown numbers have been calling to threaten them to back off. Moreover, Feminist Coalition, a pro-#EndSARS women group, said its bank account has been deactivated. “For demanding an end to police brutality we are now under attack,” the group said on Twitter on Tuesday. Nigerians are however speculating that the government in order to mute the campaign may clampdown on social media like its counterparts in other African countries have done in the past. For instance, Chad shut down the internet in early 2018 despite the international media campaigns against the deliberate clamp down on free speech in the landlocked African country. “Chad is among the worst states in the world regarding respect of digital rights,” Internet Without Borders said in December 2018. But Chad is not the only African country where the government’s censorship of digital rights was used to stifle freedom of speech. Between 2016 and 2018, the authorities in South Sudan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, and Somalia also shut down the internet in their respective countries. While Zimbabwe, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo have forced internet shutdown in 2019, Tanzania, Uganda, and a host of North African countries have stringent subsisting rules for the use of social media and digital publishing. Nigeria almost moved in that direction in 2019 as law that sought to punish individuals behind certain social media posts which was proposed to the Nigerian Senate in 2017 passed first reading. Massive media backlash prevented lawmakers from passing the bill into law. Campaigners also argued that the #EndSARS was missing on trend table on Twitter despite thousands of people tweeting the hashtag. Some of them said the government may have tampered with the hashtag. That belief led to the birth of #SARSMustEnd. Paradigm Initiatives media and program manager Adegoke Adeboye said it is not “impossible” for the Nigerian Government to shut down the internet but hoped it will not get to that point. “The government’s response to the protest has been double-faced, “ Adegoke said. “While saying all the nice things openly, it is secretly attacking private businesses that has lent their platforms to support the protest.” He said the clampdown on Flutterwave might be the first step to mute the active participation of citizens in the protest. “We all know the role that the Internet is playing in the protest and we can already imagine that someone has proposed this to the government,” Adegoke said. Adegoke further stated that it is better Nigerians are prepared than to be caught unawares. “In April last year, PIN developed some guidelines to help citizens stay online should the government shut down the internet.” “The guides are still relevant and we are also working with some of our partners to specifically help Nigerians stay online should the government shut down the internet. The digital rights community are therefore envisaging this already.”

Cristiano Ronaldo tests positive for coronavirus

Cristiano Ronaldo has tested positive for coronavirus, the Portuguese Football Federation said in a statement Tuesday.

According to the statement, Ronaldo is "well, without symptoms, and in isolation."

The 35-year-old Juventus forward played for Portugal against France in the Nations League on Sunday and against Spain in a friendly last week.

Ronaldo will now miss his country's next Nations League fixture against Sweden on Wednesday, as well as Juventus' upcoming matches which include a Serie A clash with Crotone and a Champions League group game against Dynamo Kyiv.

Following Ronaldo's positive test, the Portuguese Football Federation also said that every player subsequently returned a negative test on Tuesday morning.

Despite surging cases of Covid-19 across the globe, many footballers have left their clubs to play international games.

However, some clubs have not released players to play for their countries, including Austrian side RB Salzburg whose players were called up for Mali, Cameroon, Zambia, Austria and Hungary.

On Monday, Ronaldo posted a photo to social media of him sharing a meal with his Portugal teammates.

The forward has scored three league goals in two games for Juventus so far this season -- one against Sampdoria and a brace against AS Roma.

He also scored twice as Portugal defeated Sweden 2-0 in the Nations League last month.

With his first goal against Sweden, Ronaldo became the second player ever to reach the milestone of 100 international goals. He is now eight goals behind the all-time international record of 109 set by Iranian Ali Daei.

Earlier this year Ronaldo flew back to his native Madeira when coronavirus cases started to rise across Europe and football was suspended, according to Reuters.

He then helped Juventus lift the Serie A title following the league's resumption.

Across Nigeria, young people have hit the streets while calling for an end to police tactical squads that have since gone rogue.

Protesters in the country’s commercial capital city of Lagos have been led by celebrities. There have been protests against police brutality in Ibadan, Delta State, Enugu, Port Harcourt and elsewhere.
The protests across the country have been largely peaceful, even though there have been tense moments between the protesters and police personnel intent on keeping the peace.

In the course of recent nationwide protests, a police officer pulled the trigger right inside the mouth of a woman in Opebi, Lagos, leaving her in a pool of her own blood.

The latest outrage against SARS led Police Inspector General, Mohammed Adamu, to announce a number of restrictions to their operations on Sunday, October 4, 2020.
According to the new measures, FSARS and other tactical squads are banned from carrying out routine patrols, and other conventional low-risk duties including stop and search duties, checkpoints, mounting of roadblocks, and traffic checks.

They are also banned from embarking on patrols or assignments without official uniform or tactical gear.

"The IGP has warned the tactical squads against the invasion of the privacy of citizens particularly through indiscriminate and unauthorized search of mobile phones, laptops and other smart devices.

"They are to concentrate and respond only to cases of armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes when the need arises,"an official statement read.

Police brutality has been a perennial concern in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and largest economy.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajohas assured Nigerians that the issue is being addressed and that the police force will be reformed, but the excessive show of force on the streets and extra-judicial killings from police personnel haven't abated since Osinbajo first made the promise two years ago.

Buhari will not restructure Nigeria – Presidency replies Adeboye, others

The Presidency has reacted to the renewed calls by some individuals and socio-ethnic groups to restructure Nigeria.

Buhari in a statement signed by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, said his administration will not succumb to threats and undue pressure over the matter.

This is coming days after Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG urged President Muhammadu Buhari to restructure Nigeria to avoid the possibility of break up.
Some socio-cultural groups including Ohaneze Ndigbo and Afenifere, as well as Niger Delta agitators and individuals have renewed the call for restructuring of Nigeria.

Buhari dismissed the recurring threats as unpatriotic outbursts, adding that the government would not take any decision against the interest of 200 million Nigerians.

Part of the statement read: ”The Presidency responds to the recurring threats to the corporate existence of the country with factions giving specific timelines for the President to to do one thing or another or else, in their language, “the nation will break up.”

”This is to warn that such unpatriotic outbursts are unhelpful and unwarranted as this government will not succumb to threats and take any decision out of pressure at a time when the nation’s full attention is needed to deal with the security challenges facing it at a time of the Covid-19 health crisis.

”Repeat: this administration will not take any decision against the interests of 200 million Nigerians, who are the President’s first responsibility under the constitution, out of fear or threats especially in this hour of health crisis.”
