Buhari's Impeachment: Senate president, Lawan given 14 days to resign

A group, the Core All Progressives Congress Supporters Network (Co-APC-SuN) has said that it has uncovered plots by some members of the National Assembly to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.

Consequently, it has demanded the immediate resignation of Senator Ahmed Lawan as Senate president over his alleged involvement.

The group fingered former Borno state governor, Senator Kashim Shettima and senators from the opposition political parties as those to be investigated over the allegation.

This is contained in a statement made available to newsmen through its publicity secretary, Alhaji Bala Abubakar, who accused members of the APC of aligning forces with the opposition elements to selfishly exploit the mandate of the APC in their custody.

Abubakar said,

”We learnt reliably that these subversive elements within the party fold have concluded plans in alliance with opposition blocs in the parliament to replace President Buhari with the vice president, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, who is expected to only serve out the remaining two years of the Buhari Presidency and handover power.

”This plot is unacceptable, distasteful, offensive and condemnable to the teeming members of the ruling APC and Nigerians.

”It is a veiled agenda to imperil Nigeria’s democracy and cause further anarchy in the polity. We shall not hesitate to use every legal force at our disposal to resist the manic ambition of some desperadoes to govern the country through backdoor tactics, instead of popular ballot.

”In the meantime, let us make it abundantly clear to all and sundry that henceforth, we shall fully deploy the instruments at our disposal to closely monitor the political engagements of Sen. Lawan together with everyone mentioned in the plot to unseat President Buhari.

Anywhere a shadow of such satanic plots is noticed, we shall take the necessary actions to crush it instantaneously.

”The Co-APC-SuN therefore, calls on Sen Ahmed Lawan to resign his position as the Senate president without any further delay. The APC is not prepared to condone any acts of treachery in the party or from any individual prodded by selfish agenda to scuttle Nigeria’s democracy. We hereby demand that Senator Lawan resigns as president of the Senate within 14 days from this date. Failure to do so shall attract the wrath of APC supporters nationwide to occupy the National Assembly until the needful is done.

SWAT Kills Igwe Emmanuel Mba, Enugu Monarch

No fewer than seven houses and several vehicles were razed by protesting youths of Oruku community in the Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State on Sunday following the killing of the traditional ruler, Igwe Emmanuel Mba, by suspected operatives of the newly-formed police Special Weapons and Tactics Team.

PUNCH Metro learnt that a combined team of soldiers, policemen, and personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps had been deployed in the community to restore peace.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspected SWAT operatives, led by one Inspector Danladi, shot the monarch while he was addressing members of his community at the town hall on Saturday and he bled to death before he could get medical attention.

The policemen were said to have arrested one Mr Agozie Ani, who was also at the meeting.

Community sources told our correspondent that the policemen, who were in mufti and wielding AK-47 rifles, invaded the venue of the meeting in an SUV and a Sienna around 2pm on Saturday, adding that immediately they alighted from the vehicle, they moved into the hall and sought to see the monarch.

They were said not to have disclosed their mission but rather sought to see the monarch.

The policemen, according to one of the sources, were escorted to the town hall by three natives of Oruku identified as Emmanuel Nwobodo, Onyema Edeh, and Sunday Onunze, who also left with the cops in the same vehicles.

They were reported to have come with the team and left with the cops when the atmosphere turned bloody.

The source stated, “The traditional ruler was presiding over the meeting and the three natives pointed at him; immediately one of the policemen shot him on the thigh and he fell down and was bleeding.

“There was confusion after the monarch was shot. Everybody in the hall ran for safety as the armed men started shooting in all directions. Amidst the confusion, they made attempts to arrest some of those at the meeting.”

It was learnt that the traditional ruler, who was elected by his community on December 26, 2019, bled to death before he could get medical attention.

Another source told our correspondent that the policemen took the bleeding monarch and Ani to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, when they noticed that Mba was dying, but the hospital refused to admit him and told the cops that there was no bed space.

“They were referred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, but on arrival, doctors at the Emergency Unit pronounced the monarch dead.”

His corpse was deposited in the National Orthopaedic Hospital mortuary, while the whereabouts of Agozie was unknown as of the time of filing this report.

A former Chairman of the Nkanu East Local Government Council, who hails from the community, Ejike Ani, confirmed the incident to PUNCH Metro on Sunday.

Ani described the murder of the monarch as shocking and unacceptable to members of the community and called for the arrest of the policemen, who participated in the murder.

“Igwe Mba was murdered by men of SWAT from Abuja, who stormed the venue of our annual December 26 meeting being presided over by the deceased monarch,” he stated.

A community leader, Chief Eze Emmanuel, told our correspondent that he and other leaders of the community went to make enquiries at the state police headquarters to ascertain the identities and motive of the assailants, but they were told that there was no such entry made at any police station under the command.

As a result of the incident, aggrieved members of the community reportedly regrouped on Saturday and started burning the homes of some indigenes believed to be behind the murder.

The burning of houses continued till Sunday afternoon when security agents were deployed to restore normalcy in the community.

Seven houses, including the compound of the father of a retired federal Permanent Secretary, Chief Raymond Okenwa, were reportedly burnt down.

Some vehicles parked on the premises of the affected buildings were also set ablaze by the rampaging youths.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, said in a statement on Sunday that normalcy had been restored in the community and that a comprehensive investigation had been ordered into the incident by the Commissioner of Police, Ahmad AbdurRahman.

Ndukwe stated, “Following the acts of violence that occurred in Oruku community, Nkanu East LGA of the state over the alleged shooting and death of its traditional ruler by armed men suspected to be policemen on December 26, 2020 around 4.30pm, normalcy has been restored after the Commissioner of Police, Ahmad AbdurRahman, promptly ordered the deployment of operatives of the command in the area and the launch of a full-scale investigation into the incident.

“The commissioner, while reiterating his commitment to meticulously investigate and bring the perpetrators of the alleged murder of the traditional ruler and the ensuing acts of violence to justice, has called on residents of the community to remain calm and eschew acts capable of further inciting violence in the area, while the investigation lasts. He warns that anyone found wanting will be made to face the full weight of the law.”

WhatsApp to stop working on millions of phones from January 1 -Report

A new WhatsApp update will prevent the popular messaging app from working on millions of phones from 1 January 2021.

Older Android and iPhone devices will no longer support the latest version of the app, forcing owners to either update their mobile operating system or buy a new smartphone, Yahoo News reports.

Any iPhone not running iOS 9 or newer, or any phone not running at least Android 4.0.3 – also known as Ice Cream Sandwich – will no longer be able to open or operate the Facebook-owned app.

This means all iPhone models up to the iPhone 4 will be unable to support WhatsApp, as these phones are not capable of updating to iOS 9.

The iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S were all released before iOS 9, however owners can still update to the operating system if they are yet to do so.

Android phones that will lose WhatsApp support include the Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Desire and LG Optimus Black.

Phone owners can see what software their device is using by checking the settings section. For iPhone users, this can be found under Settings > General > Software update.

Most of the 2 billion WhatsApp users around the world will not be hit by the change, though the small fraction that are will likely comprise several million people worldwide.

A similar update at the start of 2020 saw WhatsApp make the “tough decision” of ending support for even older phones.

The NSCDC official said he didn't kill the youths intentionally

An operative of the Nigeria Civil Defense and Security Corps (NSCDC) has confessed after killing two youths on Christmas day in Benue state.

According to him, he said he was only warming the air and didn't intend to kill the youths.

A certain Jennifer Robert and another young man were killed while seeking fun in Otukpo on Christmas Day.

While many had claimed they were killed while trying to touch one of the invited artistes, other version of the report claimed they were shot by fellow cult members on Ochacho Avenue, venue of the star-studded carnival ground.

There were reports that the security personnel, who was not part of the show, had killed one Jennifer Robert and a young man whose identity could not be ascertained at the moment.

Speaking after his arrest in a video published by IDOMA VOICE, the suspect who is currently in custody, said he was only trying to warm the air.

He said,

“I was only on patrol with my team when I decided to warm the air.

“After that, I was told one person died and one other injured. It was not intentional”

Tension As Boko Haram Attacks Church, Many Dead (Photo)

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have attacked the Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria Church (Church of the Brethren) at Pemi village in the Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, killing at least five persons, Igbere TV has learnt.

According to SR, the ugly incident occurred on Thursday when the attackers also burnt down many houses, cars, and motorcycles in the community.

A source told SR that the gunmen set the church on fire and waited until it burnt down before they left.

He said the terrorists struck around 6 pm, though information about the incident did not reach the military until 9 pm.

The source added that fleeing villagers spent the night out in the cold till this morning.

It was gathered that the gunmen also invaded Debro community, shooting sporadically.

The attack comes exactly a year after six people were killed and three wounded by Boko Haram insurgents in Kwaaagilim village, also in Chibok Local Government Area.

More than 40,000 people have been killed and nearly 3 million displaced in a decade of Boko Haram terror activities in the country.

GAME OF THRONES: More PDP Reps Release Powerful Statement on Buhari's Impeachment

More members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the House of Representatives have faulted the threat by the leadership of the House to sanction the leader of the PDP caucus, Mr Kingsley Chinda, over his call for the impeachment of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Chinda had urged Nigerians to prevail on the National Assembly to begin the impeachment process against Buhari over the killing of 43 rice farmers in Borno State by Boko Haram and the abduction of over 340 schoolboys in Kankara, Katsina State.

But the Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, had in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Monday, threatened Chinda with sanctions by the House if the PDP leader continued to call for Buhari’s impeachment.

A member from Rivers State, Mr Awaji-Inombek Abiante, in an interview with our correspondent on Wednesday, however, stated that Chinda had not committed any offence by speaking for his constituents and other Nigerians as their representative.

Abiante dismissed the threat as “a lack of understanding of the responsibilities of a legislative arm of government,” adding that it exposed the “lack of depth.”

Responding to a question on whether members of the PDP caucus were out to defend Chinda, Abiante said, “Does the House have the power to send a member elected by the people of a constituency out of legislative functions? The answer is no. If in the past, people have been so barred, my people elected me to be in the House and I speak on their behalf. Nobody has the right to take me out.”

Chinda had, in his reaction to Ado-Doguwa’s threat, said he was ready to face the consequence of the impeachment calls. “I’m prepared,” he had told our correspondent.

The PDP leader had added in part, “You should ask if it would be fair to Nigerians. I speak for Nigerians. They should ask Nigerians to stop the call for the removal of President. I have the backing of the majority of Nigerians.”

Another PDP member, Farah Dagogo, representing Degema /Bonny Federal Constituency in Rivers State, had also chided Ado-Doguwa for “playing to the gallery.”

Dagogo said the Majority Leader, who was also a legislator in the defunct Third Republic, “ought to be experienced enough to know that Kingsley Chinda did not commit any legislative infraction with his patriotic call.”

Buru said this year’s Christmas sermon was focused on religious tolerance, forgiveness, better understanding, peace, love and unity among Nigerians, and the need for both Muslim and Christian clerics to be more committed through prayers for the nation, for peace, stability and the progress of the country; Muslims scholars, traditional title holders, peace ambassadors, stakeholders on peacebuilding from Katsina, Kano, Sokoto, Zamfara, Zaria, Jos and others from local Government areas in Kaduna state, attended the service.

He said the Muslims that attended the church service were from all the groups of Muslims which include Sunnih, Darikar- Tijjaniyya and Muslim Shiites.

“They ate and drank with us, also we prayed for the country together, donated their offering during the servce like every other Christian that attended the morning service did,” he said. He said the church really appreciated the presence of “our Muslim brethren and sistren that came in large number from various places to join us in celebrating Christmas.” According to him, “last year, the number of Muslims tripled the Christians, and even this year, the number increased.”

“We are happy seeing our brothers and sisters joining us in today’s Christmas service, and this shows clearly that peace and unity are gradually coming back to the region after series of set back as a result of ethnoreligious, political killing that brought so many backwardnesses to the entire 19 northern states of the region,” he said. “We must join hands together and pray to Almighty God to bring an end to corruption, banditry, terrorism, robbery, kidnapping and unnecessary killing of human beings in the region.”

“Our education, agriculture, health, and economy are facing a serious threat due to insecurity and other challenges bedevilling peace, stability in the entire region.” “Until our leaders from the entire region including former heads of state/and various religious leaders and traditional title holders with scholars from various tertiary institutes come together and find out ways and solution to the current situation, that’s when the region would regain its lost integrity.”

In his remarks, a traditional title holder from Kurmin Mashi in Kaduna state, Mallam Rabo Abdullahi, said “we must be grateful to Almighty God for giving us the opportunity to be here today for Christmas celebration. He called on Muslims and Christians to be peace ambassadors in order to promote peace and stability in the country. While wishing everyone safe journey back home, he called on Muslims and Christians to pray for the Nigerian Army on peace mission all over the world.

Tears As Former Nigerian Governor Reportedly Dies In Hospital

A former military governor of Akwa Ibom state, Idongesit Nkanga has reportedly died of an undisclosed ailment.

Nkanga who was the chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) reportedly died on Thursday, December 24, in a hospital.

A political associate and a family member of the late governor confirmed the incident to Premium Times.

The late Nkanga was Akwa Ibom governor during Ibrahim Babangida’s military regime. He retired as an air commodore in the Nigerian Airforce.

In another tragic incident, Alhaji Musa Saleh Kwankwaso, the father of a former governor of Kano state is dead, according to emerging reports.

The patriarch reportedly died on Friday morning, December 25, at the age of 93, PM News reported. His son, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, confirmed the demise of his father in a statement through his private secretary, Muhammad Inuwa Ali.

In line with the prevailing protocol put in place by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, restricting large gatherings, President Muhammadu Buhari will not be hosting the usual Christmas homage by religious and community leaders in the Federal Capital Territory.

The President urges all citizens to, in line with the prescribed protocol, observe social distancing, use face masks, wash hands frequently and avoid overcrowding of public spaces, markets, shopping centres, offices and places of worship.

President Buhari equally appeals to citizens to discourage all non-essential travels during the holiday season.

He wishes everyone a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year ahead.

Pastors and church workers who attended Shiloh 2020 allegedly down with COVID19

A worker at the Living Faith Church presided over by Pastor David Oyedepo, is allegedly currently battling with COVID19.

Journalist, Fisayo Soyombo, who shared this on Twitter handle, said the worker in question believes he contracted the virus while attending the yearly Shiloh programme of the church that took place between December 8 to 13.

The said worker claims some pastors who attended the program have also started showing symptoms of the disease.

Fisayo says the worker's wife, daughter, and domestic employee have started showing symptoms of the viral disease.

As can be seen from internet videos, congregants mingled with one another without masks or social distancing. In the past, the church observed safety protocol such as social distancing, wearing of face masks and hand washing. However, at Shiloh, no precautionary measures were in place.“People were just careless,” he said.

“Yes, many people didn’t come this year because of COVID but those in attendance were careless.”The problem is this worker knows the pastors currently exhibiting symptoms of the virus will not admit this to the Founder & Presiding Bishop, meaning other potentially infected but asymptomatic Shiloh congregants might continue mixing with people without caution.

Petrol tanker explosion kills six, destroys 30 houses in Kwara

A truck laden with premium motor spirit (PMS) allegedly exploded and killed no fewer than six persons in the early hours of Wednesday in Jebba, Moro local government area of Kwara state .

The petrol tanker said to be travelling through the ancient town had lost control and spilled its contents as it rammed into residential buildings.

Eyewitness account said that the incident resulted in huge explosions that also burnt down over 30 houses and shops.

When contacted, Spokesperson of the state Fire Service Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the incident, promising to update our correspondent in the next one hour.

Meanwhile, state Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives and properties, describing the development as devastating and sad.

In a statement, Mallam AbdulRazaq’s media aide Rafiu Ajakaye said that “the governor is very sad at this development especially with the loss of lives and millions of naira worth of properties and farmlands.

“He sends his heartfelt condolences to the affected families. He urges them to take heart and remain calm as believers. He has also directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to quickly move in to determine the material loss.

“He also commends the Kwara state Fire Service and other responders for their efforts which helped to curtail the raging inferno and minimised the loss. Once again, he condoles with the victims and their families on this very sad incident, and prays to God Almighty to repose the souls of the deceased.”

Ondo govt cancels crossover service, reschedules schools resumption

ONDO state government has cancelled crossover service by churches across the state ahead of the new year.

It also postponed the resumption of schools in the state to Monday, 18th January 2021

The Chairman, Ondo State Interministerial Committee on Coronavirus and Vice-Chancellor, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi said in Akure.

Fatusi pointed out that the State was working assiduously to ensure it records no substantial case during the second wave of the pandemic.

According to him, the Committee has had extensive interaction with various stakeholders, physically and virtually, on the need to take proactive measures against the second wave of COVID-19.

He said that ” The federal government has stipulated that schools should be closed till January 18.

“The inter-ministerial committee decided that events, as regards the pandemic, should be watched. So, we want to observe and ensure that there is no active transmission within our system.

“Primary and secondary schools will not be resuming on January 4th, they will be resuming by the 18th of January. That’s the decision regarding the schools.

“On the issue of religious services, note that there is a national curfew in place, and the state is bound by the principles of that curfew.

” Therefore, churches and mosques are not permitted in line with that curfew to hold any service beyond 10:00 pm.

“Vigils are still strictly forbidden on any day until further notice. Churches and other religious services must operate at 50% capacity and adhere to all measures that we have put in place for prevention. The same goes for event centres, they must comply with these principles. Our people must celebrate responsibly and celebrate safely.

Other guidelines according to him include government and business offices shall continue to open, with strict compliance of COVID-19 precautionary measures; markets shall continue operations but with heightened enforcement of COVID-19 precautionary measures; night clubs and relaxation spots must not operate beyond 10p.m; picnics can operate but in open space and adherence to COVID-19 protocols; while anybody above 60 years of age or with existing ailment(s) are strongly advised to remain indoor and disengage from joining any social gathering.

Fatusi said government “will begin to carry out strict monitoring of all these guidelines, likewise, it will continue to interact with religious leaders, markets associations, media, unions and other critical stakeholders in the fight against the pandemic.

” By January 2021 the State will begin strict enforcement of the law that guides against the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases in the State, stating that the law provides for three months imprisonment or payment of twenty thousand naira fine or both for offenders.

The Chairman noted that effective mechanism will be put in place for the total enforcement of the law in Ondo State, even though there will be continuous social engagement, public education, among others.

Also speaking, the Health Commissioner, Dr Jibayo Adeyeye, appealed to the media to support the government by seeing war against Coronavirus as corporate responsibility and must do everything to educate, inform and sensitize the public about its dangers.
