China Discovers Another Potential Pandemic, Flu Like Virus3

The World Health Organization (WHO), has received reports from a chinese study, of another potential pandemic virus, The flu like virus is noted to be a strain of swine flu with a type of gene, G4.

Scientists are saying there is no imminent threat, but some Chinese biologist are saying there should be a close monitoring of human population and focus should be drawn mainly on swine industry workers because they are likely to be the first carriers if there is a animal to human transmission of which the world cannot afford right now due to the drastic impact of the COVID-19 virus around the world.

The World Health Organisation has said it will “read carefully” a Chinese study on a new swine flu, which researchers noted has the potential to cause another pandemic.

A spokesman said the emergence of the virus, detected in pigs at slaughterhouses in China, showed the world must remain on guard for new diseases even as it continues to tackle the spread of COVID-19.

A study published in the American journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday highlighted a strain of swine flu with a type of gene, G4 that has “all the essential hallmarks of a candidate pandemic virus”.

While scientists say there is no imminent threat, the Chinese biologists who conducted the research warned “close monitoring in human populations, especially the workers in swine industry, should be urgently implemented”.

“We will read carefully the paper to understand what is new,” the WHO’s Christian Lindmeier told a Geneva briefing on Tuesday, adding it was important to collaborate on findings and keep tabs on animal populations.

“It also highlights we cannot let our guard down on influenza and need to be vigilant and continue surveillance even in the coronavirus pandemic,” he added.

The Chinese researchers analysed 30,000 nasal swabs taken from pigs at slaughterhouses between 2011 to 2018. They identified a G4 variant of the H1H1 ‘swine flu’ virus strain that caused a deadly pandemic in 2009.

Pig farm workers also showed elevated levels of the virus in their blood, found the study’s authors, based at two Chinese universities, the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, and the University of Nottingham.

“Such infectivity greatly enhances the opportunity for virus adaptation in humans and raises concerns for the possible generation of pandemic viruses,” the researcher wrote.

The study noted pigs were important “mixing vessels” for influenza viruses and systemic surveillance of diseases in the animals was “essential for early warning and preparedness for the next potential pandemic”.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a daily news conference on Tuesday that the government was “closely following the developments in regard to this matter”.

“We will take all necessary measures to prevent the spread and outbreak of any virus,” he added.

Carl Bergstrom, a biologist at the University of Washington, said the newly identified virus posed “no immediate threat to public health”.

“There’s no evidence that G4 is circulating in humans, despite five years of extensive exposure. That’s the key context to keep in mind,” he said.

He added: “Every indication is that the G4 virus would have to undergo some evolutionary change to spread readily in people, and it may never do that. If it does? We know how to make vaccines for influenza viruses. It could be included in the seasonal vaccine; the only issue is timing.”

The 2009 H1N1 pandemic, thought to have originated in pigs in Mexico, is estimated to have infected more than 700 million people worldwide. It caused nearly 17,000 lab-confirmed deaths reported to the WHO, but the true number of fatalities linked to the disease is believed to have been far higher.

''It was hell'' Peter Okoye shares his experience after himself, his wife and daughter tested positive for COVID19

Singer, Peter Okoye, this afternoon revealed himself, his wife Lola and their daughter Aliona, tested positive for the novel Coronavirus.

In a video he posted online, Peter said he was the one who first tested positive with the virus.

''For the past three weeks, I have been ill and most people didn't even know what was wrong with me. I kept it to myself. It has been three weeks of hell for me and my family.

I had COVID19 for about three weeks and it happened to me.

I was sick and I tested positive.

The reason why I came out to say it is because I am going to encourage a lot of people concerning this whole social distancing, getting used to sanitizing your hands, disinfecting your environment, wearing your face mask and all that.

It's been hell for this family in this house. Not just me. Even two of my domestic staff.

After a week, my daughter caught the virus as well. It was sad that when she caught it, the doctor insisted that she has to be self isolated in her own room but my wife did something very courageous. She said no.

I was sick and I was being self-isolated in my guest room. I couldn't even see my sick daughter and I was feeling so bad. I felt so bad because I felt that I am the one who actually brought the virus to the house. It was so bad that I had to be calling her on video, checking on her.

The next day, my wife did someting very courageous. She picked our daughter from her room, held her and took her to the master bedroom and she called me and she started crying. I asked her what happened and she said I cannot live this girl alone. I would rather be infected and be with her.

Five or six days later, my daughter was pronounced negative. When she was pronounced negative, we knew it wasn't going to end there. The next day, Lola became positive. It has been hell but we had a bad experience.

I just want to tell everybody that this COVID19 is real. Don't take it for granted.

I am happy to announce that my wife, myself, our daughter and two of our domestic staff all of us are now negative''he said

BREAKING: Prepare For Total lockdown If …. —– Gov Sanwo Olu Hints Lagosians

Lagos and Osun state governments have threatened fresh lockdowns amid increasing COVID-19 cases in the states and the country.

Fresh 684 COVID-19 cases were recorded in 18 states and the Federal Capital Territory on Friday by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, bringing the total number of cases to 23,298.

While 8,253 discharged patients had recovered, 554 deaths were recorded.

Lagos, Oyo, and Katsina had the highest number of cases at 259, 76 and 69, respectively. Delta, Rivers had 46; Ogun, 23; Edo, 22; Osun, 22; and Ebonyi, 21.

FCT had 20; Kaduna, 16; Ondo, 10; Imo, 9; and Abia, 9. Gombe had 5; Plateau, 4; Bauchi, 4; Ekiti, 2; and Anambra, 1.

Due to the rising number of cases each day, Lagos and Osun state governments have threatened fresh lockdowns if the people failed to abide by government protocols such as social distancing and wearing of face masks in the public.

Speaking at a media briefing monitored by one of our correspondents on Friday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, said even though the state had been able to draw a balance between the public health crisis and ensuring livelihoods were not in jeopardy, the government would not hesitate to impose another lockdown if the things (cases) got out of hands.

Lagos State Government Threatens To Impose New Lockdown Over Increasing COVID-19 Cases

The Lagos state government has raised alarm that it could issue another lockdown as Coronavirus cases in the state continue to escalate.

Recall that Lagos state, Nigeria’s commercial capital has recorded over 9,741 cases with 1,475 recovered and 126 deaths.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, has revealed that the local government areas with the highest number of cases were Eti-Osa, Alimosho, Kosofe, Ikeja, Oshodi, Surulere and Lagos Mainland.

This was revealed by the health commissioner, Prof. Akin Abayomi while speaking to newsmen at a media briefing.
Abayomi said the government would not hesitate to impose another lockdown if the COVID-19 cases continue to sky rocket.

“We believe we are managing a delicate balance between the public health crisis and the economic livelihood of Lagosians. If things are getting out of hand, we will certainly consider another lockdown,” he said.

“We are in the middle of the outbreak and we have not even peaked yet, and so the cases are still rising. We still expect to see a lot more cases in the next one month or two. I would use this platform to remind Lagosians that we have not yet peaked and Lagos is still going through the active community transmission of COVID-19.

“I think what may be giving you a false sense of security or confidence is that we say most people have mild to moderate disease . While that may be so, between three and five per cent of Lagosians that catch this infection have an extremely severe to critical form of COVID-19 and the risk of dying in that percentage is extremely high.
“Two to five per cent may seem like a small percentage, but even one per cent of 25 million people is a lot of Lagosians. We are not prepared to lose 250,000 Lagosians and we certainly will not even like to contemplate that number.

“So I appeal to Lagosians, particularly people who we believe are in the vulnerable category; anybody over the age of 50 or 55 with underlying medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity or any other medical condition that interferes with their immune system, they are extremely vulnerable to COVID-19.

“And the young people may be going out there with mild to moderate disease but they certainly go home in the evening and expose their parents and grandparents to the vulnerabilities.

“So I appeal to Lagosians, keep practising the social distancing measures and I hope these practices will help to flatten the curve and protect certain vulnerable members of the community.”

Flood sweeps away 17-year-old girl in Lagos

A 17-year-old girl, simply identified as Ayisat, has gone missing after she was allegedly swept away by a flood in Lagos.

The flood, resulting from the heavy downpour in Lagos on Monday, June 22, swept the teenager away in Surulere.

A statement by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said the unfortunate incident occurred at the Alapafuja axis of the Surulere Low-Cost Housing Estate, Lagos.

Head, Public Affairs, LASEMA, Nosa Okunbor in the statement, said the agency had already commenced a search and rescue operation for the missing girl.

He explained that major and minor drains and drainage canals in and around the Alapafuja axis of Surulere are being searched for the missing teenager.

Okunobor said: "Upon arrival at the scene of incident, it was discovered that the canal along Alapafuja close linking Bank Olemoh was submerged as a result of flooding and a teenage girl named Ayisat was swept away by the flood around 12:30p.m (Monday).

"The search and rescue operation by the agency which commenced immediately the distress alert was received, has led to the ongoing thorough search of all major and minor categories of drains and drainage canals in and around Alapafuja axis of the Surulere Low-Cost Housing Estate in Surulere Local Government Area, Lagos.

"Outcome of the present operation will determine the extent to which the radius of the Search and Rescue operation will be extended beyond the immediate locality of Surulere to other Local Governments/Local Council Development areas trailing the water/flood flow, as past experience has proven that strong floods have been known to transfer victims far from incident scenes."

Mr Okunbor added that the body of the missing teenager has not been found even when the LASEMA Response Team searched through the adjoining canals. He said the operation will be suspended till Tuesday morning.

Police parade three brothers arrested for running a fake foundation using the name of force spokesperson, Frank Mba

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested three brothers identified as Emmanuel Ushie 23; Henry Ushie, 30 and a graduate of Statistics from Anambra State University and Matthew Ushie, 28, and an OND graduate from Federal Polytechnic Oko, for running a fake Frank Mba Foundation bank account with FCMB.
A statement released by the spokesperson of the Force, Frank Mba, said the trio used a fake Facebook account and then fraudulently operated bank accounts to defraud innocent Nigerians of their hard-earned monies under the pretext that the Foundation is raising money to help vulnerable Nigerians during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Investigations by officers attached to the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) reveal that the brothers engage extensively and serially in such frauds and other related cybercrimes.

During the unrelenting manhunt of the fraudsters, Henry Ushie, an elder sibling to Emmanuel Ushie, was identified as the gang leader of the syndicate behind the scam. He went underground as his younger siblings also involved in the crime were arrested.

Following weeks of intense follow-up and meticulous investigations, Henry was arrested on Thursday, June 11 at a hideout in Ihiala, Anambra State. His arrest eventually led to the arrest of his younger brother Mathew Ushie ‘m’ who is also an active member of the syndicate.

Further investigation revealed that Mathew Ushie had been arrested in Ghana last year in a well-publicized bust of fraudsters where he and other international fraudsters used the name of the Inspector General of Police of Ghana, John Kudalor to defraud unsuspecting Ghanaian policemen in the guise of providing an opportunity for them to attend United Nations peacekeeping mission using a fake Facebook account. Information about his arrest and parading before the press in Ghana is available on the internet.

Similarly, Henry Ushie had also been arrested in 2017 by the IRT for impersonating then ACP ABBA Kyari, the Commander IRT on Facebook, and defrauding many innocent Nigerians before he was arrested and subsequently charged to court for impersonation. He eventually got bail from the court and went back to the same crime.

Mba said all the suspects will be charged to court at the conclusion of investigations.

The police spokesperson added that 21 other suspected fraudsters including a woman, have been arrested for their involvement and indictment in cases of romance and online dating scams, generating and deployment of fake bank alerts, hacking and fraudulent wire transfers, cyberstalking and impersonation of high-profile personalities in Nigeria and across the world.

Exhibits recovered from the suspects include:

i. 11 Laptop Computers
ii. 37 Mobile Phones
iii. 11 SIM cards of different telecoms networks
iv. 5 International passports
v. 12 ATM Cards
vi. Fake US Dollar notes.

vii. Quantities of dry leaves suspected to be Marijuana

More deaths may be recorded in next 3 weeks - FG warns

As governments across levels channel efforts against the coronavirus scourge, the presidential task force on Covid-19 said things may dive down to worse as more fatalities may be recorded in the coming weeks.

Speaking with pressmen, Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation and chairman of the presidential task force on Covid-19, made this known as virus ravages the country.

Legit.ng notes that the fight against the scourge got pricked as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced 661 new cases of Covid-19 in 14 states.

Presently, Nigeria's Covid-19 total infection has hit 19,808 with 6,718 recoveries and 506 deaths.

Mustapha has now attributed the spike in the number of cases to the large scale testing which the country has embarked upon.

The PTF chairman, however, warned against the inevitable danger ahead, saying Nigeria may get into panic mode soon.

“The figures you see now are a reflection of the testing capacity of the country. We have ramped up testing. From just about two centres, we now have over 30 and so, the results are the figures you see now, the outcome of which will be an increase in the number of casualties in the next three weeks, when they’ll start manifesting.

“There’ll be pandemonium and we might get into a panic mode. Sadly, we are still in the first wave and the figures will not abate, because the attitudes of a majority of the people do not suggest that we want the figures to abate,” Mustapha explained.

The SSG also enjoined Nigerians to support the federal government's efforts against the Covid-19 pandemic.

How accused allegedly committed scams

The accused individuals allegedly targeted U.S. businesses and individuals through deceptive global threats known as business email compromise (BEC), and romance fraud.

The treasury department alleged that Uzuh's scams started from around early 2015.

He allegedly obtained a list of contact information for employees at U.S. companies, and, together with co-conspirators, sent spoofed emails to the companies impersonating executives.

He reportedly would often target over 100 businesses a day with such fraudulent emails.

"A loss in excess of $6,300,000 can be attributed to the BEC scheme led by Uzuh and an accomplice," OFAC said.

Olorunyomi was accused of leading a scheme to victimise Americans through the use of romance fraud between September 2015 and June 2017.

The 37-year-old and his co-conspirators created fictitious profiles on dating websites and posed as individuals looking for love.

"Losses exceeding $1,000,000 can be attributed to the romance fraud scheme led by Olorunyomi and his accomplice," authorities said.

Ogunsakin, 37, allegedly provided Uzuh and other co-conspirators with bank accounts that were used to receive fraudulent wire transfers; helped Uzuh to contact victims companies; and also ran his own BEC schemes.

31-year-old Okpoh similarly worked closely with Uzuh, engaging in money laundering, and providing hundreds of U.S. bank accounts that were used to receive fraudulent wire transfers from victims of BEC and romance fraud.

Benson, 33, did the same, allegedly communicating with multiple romance fraud victims to obtain their bank account details, and providing the account information to Uzuh to receive fraudulent wire transfers from U.S. businesses.

One of the accounts the 32-year-old provided to individuals in the scheme was used to receive a $69,150 fraudulent wire transfer.

"As a result of today’s action, all property and interests in property of the designated persons that are in the possession or control of U.S. persons or within or transiting the United States are blocked, and U.S. persons generally are prohibited from dealing with them," OFAC's statement noted.

U.S. Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, said the American government will continue to protect and defend at-risk Americans and businesses from malicious actors.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Omaha Field Office Cyber Task Force, and assisted by the efforts of law enforcement counterparts from Nigeria.

Pastor Caught With Juju In Cross River! Why Nigerian Pastors Deceive People With Charms

Nigerians have reacted to the news of a pastor who was caught with charms in Cross River state. The pastor, Rev Paul Abam, who is the head Pastor of Word Based Prophetic and Deliverance Ministry was said to have been caught planting charms in his cousin's land so as to extort him.

According to Reubenabati.com.ng, a close family source said the Pastor told his cousin that he needed money to uproot a charm someone planted in his land. He was however traced and caught redhanded with some fetish stuffs at a shrine in Itigidi after a resident of the community saw him planting the said charm in the land.

The pictures of the disgraced cleric circulating online show him in an attire made of what appears to be dried leaves and stalks. He held a board showing the charms he was caught with. In the background, there was a multitude of people seen.

Oftentimes we heard of some Nigerian pastors caught with charm (juju). In fact, we've heard from traditional healers who brag that some pastors patronize them for "powers". In Nigeria, one of the gimmicks that can get any Nigerian pastor a large congregation is making claims of miracles.

Given that Nigerians love miracles, signs and wonders, most churches have capitalised on that. Almost every church banner or signboard in Nigeria advertises some kind of miracle and deliverance.

We remember an audio recording that leaked some years ago of Abuja based billionaire pastor, Joshua Iginla. From the recording, a voice alleged to be that of the pastor was heard seeking spiritual powers from a woman who was heard speaking some incantations.
