#EndSARS: There was no single corpse at the Lekki tollgate. Some people there were seeing double- Army chief, Tukur Buratai says

Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff, says that contrary to what some persons have reported, there was no single corpse at the Lekki tollgate on October 20 when the military came and fired shots while #ENDSARS protesters gathered to demand an end to police brutality.

According to him, some people saw double during the shooting incident.

The Cable reports that the Army Chief shared this opinion when he spoke at the decoration of 39 newly promoted major-generals on Friday, December 4. He opined that a spiritual warfare seminar held by the army helped in preventing deaths at the protest ground. In his words

“I am glad that we held the Spiritual Warfare Seminar on Wednesday and most of the decorated generals today are graduates of the seminar,” he said.

I must say that the spiritual warfare seminar we had last time helped us during the last #EndSARS protest to the extent that there was no single corpse, but some persons were seeing double at Lekki toll gate in Lagos state.

We will continue to protect every law abiding Nigerian anywhere in the country and we will do that in accordance with the rules of engagement and confines of the constitution.”

The police chief also cautioned the Army Generals against lobbying for appointments.

“Democracy has come to stay. We will not tolerate any agent of destabilization. The years of military misadventure in politics have never carried us anywhere. It is over,” he said.

Do not hobnob with politicians. At this rank of two-star generals, do not lobby for appointment. If you want to lobby for appointment, lobby the chief of army staff and you can only do this through hard work, discipline and loyalty.

The crop of officers (39 major generals) decorated yesterday will never be dragged into any interest that is contrary to the sustenance of democracy in our nation.

All our eyes are on you. We know there are several moves to get your attention. You must make sure that whatever you are doing, and when some persons approach you, you must act within the confines of the constitution.”he said

We may consider legalising carrying of arms ― Imo PDP Chieftain, Nwalozie

Angry reactions have continued to trail gruesome massacre of over 43 rice farmers in Zabarmari community, Jere Local Government Area of Borno State.

Reacting to the incident, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Imo State, Sir Chimezie Nwalozie, said: “It is part of our nature sometimes, as humans, to want to wait for others to tell us exactly the same thing we know, we should do.

“It is obvious that both President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the security agencies, have failed us woefully.

In better developed countries, the security situation in Nigeria is enough to make the President resign or lead to the kind of uprising that would eventually lead to his resignation.

“However, this is Africa and the recent experience from #EndSARS is still fresh in our minds.

Nevertheless, if the President is really sincere, he should know that the time to rejuvenate the security apparatus is now.

The heads of the security agencies have been there for over five years and in the present circumstances, we all know that they have exhausted their strategies.

We need fresh minds with fresh zeal and a new approach to tackle the menace before the terrorists begin to think of expanding their acquired territories.

“One is also tempted to advocate the legalization of arms for the citizenry. This is how any threatened person, can defend themselves to an extent.

Again, one may ask if we are matured enough to handle that with the present regional tendencies problem. Indeed, Buhari and his service chiefs have failed Nigeria and Nigerians.

A social crusader, Mazi Shedrack Nzediegwu, described the growing insecurity in the land as “a rampaging cancer that is about to swallow Nigeria”.

His words: “What we are seeing is the shadow of the true cancer, about to swallow this thing called Nigeria. A faulty foundation cannot stand for long. Quote me, the foundation of this country, Nigeria, was faulty from the beginning.

“They said that Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was not good and they had a better material in Muhammadu Buhari. Let’s stop pretending. We are all responsible for Nigeria’s problems, by allowing all manner of persons to occupy public offices.”

An obviously angry citizen, who identified himself as Victor Ekwomadu, said: “You people should not disturb yourselves. They know what they are doing and their motives.” In his own reaction, an educationist, Dr. Imma C. Ikoro, said:

“Personally, I don’t believe that the President has done all he needs to do, so long as he remains adamant about rejigging the security apparatus in the country. Also, how were the monies budgeted in billions for security, over the years, spent? This needs to be addressed first.”

An Owerri electrical engineer, Ikechukwu Ukaegbu, opined that Nigeria’s problems are more than the citizens think.

“Nigeria’s problems are more than what we think. Again, nobody can solve any problem by denying that it exists. I have not seen anything that will convince me that the Federal Government believes that insecurity in the land is a huge problem”, Ukaegbu said.

Reacting also, a legal practitioner, Mr. C. E. Nnodu, lambasted the presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, for saying that the farmers did not get clearance from the military before going to their farm.

“The most pitiable of the reactions to the massacre in Bornu State, of the 43 farmers, was that of Garba Shehu, the senior Presidential spokesman on media where he alleged that the beheaded farmers did not get clearance from the military before going to their farms to harvest.

“Pray, I believe the army garrisoned the entire troubled areas of the conflict, as well as securely liberated them. The poor peasant farmers going to the army high command to seek clearance is, to say the least, extremely nonsensical.

“To me, this is an insensitive and irresponsible response from a highly placed spokesman drawing salary from public coffers.”

JUST IN: Buratai Reacts To Calls For Sacking Of Service Chiefs, Says Boko Haram May Persist For 20yrs SERAP To Presidency: Apologise For Garba Shehu’s Comment On Slain Borno Farmers

Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai

Following calls for the removal of Service Chiefs over worsening insecurity in the country, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has suggested that those making such calls lacked proper understanding of how terrorists operate.

Recall that there were renewed calls for President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the country’s security chiefs after Boko Haram insurgents reportedly beheaded over 40 farmers at Zabarmari village in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State on Saturday.

#SackTheServiceChiefs had trended on Twitter on Monday, as Nigerians took to the platform to accuse the security chiefs of incompetence and called for their dismissal by the president.

But reacting in a post on his verified Facebook account on Tuesday, Buratai said ending terrorism in Nigeria would depend on the level of “appropriate responses” by the military and members of the public.

He wrote, “There is general misunderstanding of what insurgency and terrorism entail. There is likelihood of terrorism persisting in Nigeria for another 20 years. It only depends on the level of escalation and the appropriate responses by all stakeholders both civil and military authorities. Also, by both local and international actors. Citizens responsibility is equally important and imperative. All must cooperate to contain the lingering insecurity. Let there be collective action and responsibility.”

Meanwhile, THE WHISTLER had reported that following the gruesome murder of the Borno farmers, President Buhari said on Sunday that the military had been given all the necessary support required to fight insurgency.
In a fallow up statement on Monday, the president said he had given the military, “marching order to take the fight to the insurgents, not on a one-off, but on a continuous basis, until we root out the terrorists,” adding that, “We will intensify our cooperation with neighbouring countries on bilateral and multilateral levels, to ensure that there is no hiding place for the terrorists.”
The Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to apologise to Nigerians for the utterances made by presidential aide, Garba Shehu, regarding the recent killing of farmers in Borno state.

THE WHISTLER earlier reported that Shehu was quoted by BBC to have said that the farmers failed to get safety clearance from the military before proceeding to their farms, where the insurgents waylaid them and slit their throats.
But SERAP stated that such comment puts the current administration in bad light.

“We urge Nigerian authorities to publicly apologise for the statement by their spokesperson implying that the farmers killed in Borno state deserve to die because they did not get military clearance before visiting their farms.

“Right to life is a fundamental right,” it stated.
Recall that the United Nations (UN) in Nigeria had on Sunday, described Saturday’s attack and killing of the farmers as a heinous crime.

“l am outraged and horiffied by the gruesome attack against civilians carried out by non-state armed groups in villages near Borno State capital Maiduguri,” the UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Edward Kallon said.

Meanwhile, a presidential delegation on Monday, visited Borno to condole with the people and Government of the state.

Bishop: 2021 will witness so many killings of prominent Nigerians

The presiding Bishop of Fire Evangelistic ministries International Abuja, Bishop Paul Samgreen Obafemi, has warned that Nigeria will witness a serious revolution in the year 2021 that will lead to bloodshed and restlessness.

Bishop Obafemi, during a five-day power-packed crusade tagged “Oh Lord, fight my battle”, which took place in Kabba, Kogi State, over the weekend, said the God revealed to him that there would be serious upheavals next year unless there is serious fervent prayers to avert it.

According to him, there will be a serious revolution that will lead to restlessness and chaos all over the country which will result to loss of many lives and destruction of public property.

‘2021 will be full of lots of bloodshed , Nigerians especially our leaders should pray very hard because I see some of our leaders running helter skelter , some major places including army barracks will be bombed.

‘Some governors, prominent political office holders and politicians including some traditional rulers should pray very hard not to go with this revolution because there will be so many killings.

‘Unless there is serious prayers, this revolution will lead to Nigeria near disintegration, it will touch the fabric of this nation, so many things will be affected and the just concluded endSARS protests will be a child’s play.

‘Let everyone take serious precaution , pray very hard and watch for 2021 will be full of restlessness, it’s a year of sorrow, weeping and shedding of blood, those who have ears, let them hear,’ the man of God warned.

FG warns against Christmas carol, tells Nigerians abroad to stay away

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has urged Nigerians to be weary of festivities such as Christmas carols as the year winds down.

It also warned against non-essential travels just as it asked Nigerians abroad to remain wherever they are or stand the risk of being stranded in the country in the event that the government takes a decision on international travels.

The call formed the theme of the speeches of the Chairman of the PTF, Boss Mustapha; the national coordinator, Sani Aliyu; the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire; and the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Chikwe Ihekweazu, at the weekly briefing of the task force in Abuja on Monday.

Mustapaha, who is also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said the PTF was escalating its surveillance and testing drive to ensure that the spread of the virus was effectively contained as the nation approaches the festive season.

“We shall continue to remind Nigerians that all non-essential trips should be put off this December. This is for your safety and good health,” he said.

Speaking on vaccines, the PTF chairman said while it was a significant achievement, it was however, important for the citizens to continue to comply with the non-pharmaceutical interventions before the vaccines would become available.

“The PTF is already working on the strategy for gaining access to the vaccine as soon as they are available,” he added.

The SGF also said over the past weeks, discussions have been held about the safety issues pertaining to the National Sports Festival scheduled to hold in Benin, Edo State.

He said new dates have been agreed upon early in 2021, before which, measures would be put in place to minimize infections.

‘Don’t come home for Christmas’
Aliyu advised Nigerians in the Diaspora not to consider coming home, urging them to celebrate Christmas and New Year wherever they are.

He said, “Nigerians outside the country, hopefully they will stay where they are. And for Nigerians in-country, we will also stay where we are.

The national coordinator disclosed that for every 1,000 passengers coming into the country, the nation records 10 positive cases of COVID-19.

He added, “Please, for this period, if your travel is not essential, stay where you are. We are actively discouraging Nigerians abroad from coming home this Christmas because of COVID-19 and the number of infections we have outside the country.

“So, the message is; if you do not want to get stranded, if you do not want to bring COVID-19 to your elderly relatives in Nigeria, please stay where you are. There will be other holidays.”

Christmas carols, travels ‘supper spreaders’ of virus
At the press briefing, Ihekweazu said Christmas carols, travels and other gatherings during festivities were capable of turning out to be “super spreaders” of the virus, hence the need for Nigerians to avoid them as much as possible.

He said, “This is really to re-emphasise the call by the PTF that many of the traditional meetings that we engage in at this time of the year, whether they are Christmas carols or festivals, trips, family gatherings, each of those could end up being a super spreader event. So, we must take this into consideration as we make our choices.”

Ihekweazu said a travel advisory has been issued detailing why both local and international travels must be avoided unless they are absolutely necessary.

Meanwhile, the SGF said the national response to COVID-19 pandemic and security must be prioritised as security could not be relaxed even while tackling the virus in the country.

Mustapha also noted that the global number of COVID-19 infections crossed 63 million on Sunday, 29th November, 2020.

According to him, in Africa, Nigeria ranked 5th for both the highest cumulative cases and deaths.
